I RESPECTFULLY ASK THE DISTRICT NOT TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THESE PLANS BECAUSE ELIMINATING HEALTH CLASS AND EMBODYING PORTIONS OF IT IN BIOLOGY IS NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF BUSD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. FIRST HEALTH CLASS TEACH STUDENTS REAL-LIFE SKILLS INCLUDING HEALTHY HABITS AND IMPROVING PHYSICAL WELLNESS AND REDUCING RISKY BEHAVIORS AND DEVELOPING SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS.
THESE ARE ALL LESSONS CRUCIAL--SORRY, AS STUDENTS FACE INCREASING SOCIETAL PRESSURES AND DIFFICULT CHOICES IN DAILY LIVES. FOR EXAMPLE, MY SON WITNESSED A STUDENT TO PASS OUT AFTER CONSUMING AN EDIBLE.

HEALTH CLASS INFORMS ABOUT THE SERIOUS RISK OF VAPING AND NICOTINE ADDICTION. IN ADDITION THE HEALTH CURRICULUM INCLUDES COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTION ON DRUG, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING, RESISTING PEER PRESSURE AND C PERFORM R TRAINING.
THESE TOPICS ARE NOT OPTIONAL EXTRAS.
THESE ARE LIFE SKILLS THAT HELP STUDENTS MAKE INFORMED HEALTHY DECISIONS THAT BENEFIT BOTH THEMSELVES AND SOCIETY.
INCORPORATING HEALTH INTO BIOLOGY WOULD ALSO NEGATIVELY IMPACT THE QUALITY OF BIOLOGY INSTRUCTION.
BEFORE 2018, BIOLOGY FOCUSED ENTIRELY ON BIOLOGY CONTENT.
HOWEVER, WHEN THE DISTRICT IMPLEMENTED THE NEXT GENERATION'S SCIENCE STANDARD, THE STAND-ALONE EARTH SCIENCE CLASS WAS ELIMINATED. AND EARTH SCIENCE CONCEPTS DISTRIBUTED AMONG BIOLOGY, AND CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS COURSES.
AS A RESULT TEACHERS WERE REQUIRED TO FIT ADDITIONAL CONTENT INTO ALREADY DEMANDING SCIENCE CURRICULA.
THIS REDISTRIBUTION DILUTED THE DEPTH OF BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY AND PHYSIC. AND LIMITING STUDENT ACCESS TO EARTH SCIENCE EDUCATION. SINCE NOT EVERY STUDENT TAKES CHEMISTRY OR PHYSIC--MAY I FINISH.

EARLIER IN BARGAINING THE DISTRICT STATED COMPENSATION DISCUSSIONS WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE GOVERNOR'S REVISION AND NOW STAFF RECEIVED A DISTRICT WIDE BUDGET BEFORE BARGAINING THAT AFFECTS STAFF MORAL AND ONGOING NEGOTIATIONS.
EVERY VOICE VALUED MUST INCLUDE TEACHERS AND SUPPORT STAFF, CLASSIFIED. EVERYONE THAT WORKS DIRECTLY WITH STUDENTS EVERY DAY. EDUCATORS CONTINUE TO FACE RISING COSTS FOR HOUSING, CHILDCARE AND THE DISTRICT DATA SHOWS THAT BUSD ENDED 24-25 WITH 57% RESERVE FAR ABOVE THE STATE REQUIRED 3% AND HIGHER THAN FIVE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS WHO RESERVE RANGE FROM 21-47%. AT THE SAME TIME THE GOVERNOR MAY REVISE PROJECTS 2.3 COLA FOR 25-26 AND ADDITIONAL FUNDING INCREASE FOR 26-27, INCLUDING A SUPER COLA.
AND THE CURRENT PROPOSAL IS 1.5% PER YEAR.
AS EDUCATORS WE VALUE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY AND LONG-TERM PLANNING. HOWEVER, RETAINING HIGH-QUALITY TEACHERS IS ESSENTIAL TO ENSURING THAT EVERY SCHOOL READY AND TRULY PUTTING STUDENTS FIRST.

I SUPPORT INCLUSION AND BELIEVE THAT EVERY CHILD HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND GROW AND BE A PART OF THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY. HOWEVER SCHOOL INCLUSION CANNOT COME AT THE EMOTIONAL SAFETY. THIS YEAR MY KINDERGARTEN SON WAS INJURED MULTIPLE TIMES BY A STUDENT KNOWN TO BE AGGRESSIVE HAPPENED DURING PLAYGROUND TIME WHEN THEY INCLUDED THESE STUDENTS. ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION MY SON WAS GRABBED OR PULLED BY THE NECK BECAUSE THE STUDENT WANTED ACCESS TO THE EQUIPMENT. THESE INCIDENTS INCLUDED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR INCLUDING TODAY.
AT MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL MY DAUGHTER SPAT ON AT PE AND TO HELP HER FEEL COMFORTABLE RETURNING TO CLASS, THE EMOTIONAL IMPACT DID NOT DISAPPEAR.
UPSET AND ANXIOUS AND HAD TO CONTINUE TO SEE THE STUDENT REGULARLY MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO MOVE PAST THE EXPERIENCE.
MY CONCERN IS NOT ABOUT INDIVIDUAL STUDENT, MY CONCERN IS IF ENOUGH RESOURCES AND STAFF IS AVAILABLE TO ENSURE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR EVERYONE. WHEN STUDENTS HAVE DOCUMENTED BEHAVIOR THAT INCLUDE CHOKING AND SPITTING AND HARM OF OTHERS AND THE DISTRICT MUST ENSURE THAT THERE IS EFFECTIVE SAFEGUARDS IN PLACE. PARENTS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WORRY WHETHER THEIR CHILD WILL BE HURT WHILE ATTENDING SCHOOL.
THE BOARD HAS ASKED IN THE PAST FAMILIES WHY THEY CHOOSE TO LEAVE THE DISTRICT. FOR ME STUDENT SAFETY WOULD BE A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR. MY CHILDREN'S SAFETY IS ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE. IF I CANNOT TRUST MY CHILDREN--MY CHILDREN'S PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL SAFETY AT SCHOOL, I WOULD HAVE TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER OTHER EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS. I URGE THE BOARD TO PROVIDE SAFETY AND THAT EVERY CHILD DESERVES A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY CAN THRIVE WITHOUT FEAR OF BEING HARMED.

WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE? YOUR FACILITY MASTER PLAN HAS SIX MAIN SECTIONS AND PLUS SEVERAL APPENDIXES. AND 2-6, THE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.

A LOT OF INEFFICIENCIES IN THAT KIND OF UNDERUTILIZATION AND PUT A FINANCIAL STRAIN ON THE DISTRICT OVER TIME.
I WOULD SAY THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FINDINGS AND I SHOULD ALSO SAY ANOTHER ELEMENT OF THIS, THE PRIMARY DRIVER OF DECLINING ENROLLMENT IS BIRTH RATES.
THERE ARE STUDENTS THAT ARE LEAVING THE DISTRICT TO NEIGHBORING AREAS BUT FUNDAMENTALALLY THAT'S NOT THE CAUSE OF DECLINE, IT'S A DEMOGRAPHIC CAUSE IN THE REGION AND CALIFORNIA. AND THEN FINALLY WE HAD A CHANCE TO MEET WITH MEMBERS OF THE DISTRICT LEADERSHIP AND FOCUSED GROUPS.
AND AGAIN DEPENDING ON WHO WE WERE SPEAKING WITH AND EQUITY THAT STUDENTS ON ONE SIDE OF DISTRICT HAD SAME RESOURCES AS ANOTHER SIDE. AND THESE THINGS CAME UP AND FROM LEADERSHIP STRONG DESIRES FOR IMPROVEMENTS ON SECURITY CAMERAS AND TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT THOSE SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS. VERY ENGAGED GROUP OF STAKEHOLDERS AND I THINK WE INCORPORATED A LOT OF INPUT WE RECEIVED INTO THE PLAN. IN TERMS OF PAGE NUMBERS, THE LARGEST SECTION IN THE FACILITY'S MASTER PLAN ARE THE FACILITY DISTRICT ASSESSMENTS OF EACH SITE.
AND TAKE A MINUTE TO TALK ABOUT THE METHODOLOGY THAT ASSESSMENTS CONDUCTED. SENT TRHREE TEAMS TO EACH SITE AND ONE LOOKING AT ROOF AND BUILDING AND INTERIOR FINISHES AND SITE AND OUTDOOR CONDITIONS. AND BASED ON THE CONCLUSION OF THAT STRATEGIC PLAN AND PROCESS, INVESTING IN SOME SITES AND VERSUS NOT INVESTING IN OTHERS AND INVESTING EVENLY ACROSS SITES AND PORTABLES. WE HAVE INCLUDED A NUMBER OF DIRECTIONS THAT THE DISTRICT COULD TAKE AND THE DECISION OF WHAT IS THE RIGHT NUMBER OF SEATS AND HOW WE REACH THAT IS THE TOP RECOMMENDATION. NEXT UP IS A STRATEGY IS TO MAKE SOME STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS AT BELLFLOWER MIDDLE HIGH SCHOOL. A LOT OF POSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THE NEW STEAM BUILDING AT MAYFAIR AND CONCERNS ABOUT EQUITY AND FACILITIES AT BELLFLOWER, WE ARE RECOMMENDING IMPROVEMENTS THERE. SINCE THE LAST PRESENTATION IN FEBRUARY, WE HAVE CONDUCTED AN EXTENSIVE SURVEY ON ADVISORY PROCESS, AND LCAP WAS YIELDED TO 5200 RESPONSES AND TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AND 1,000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE RESULTS WAS SHARED WITH ADVISORY GROUPS AS PART OF INPUT COLLECTION PROCESS.
AND DATA MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT HAS MET THEIR GOAL OF DISTRIBUTING AN INTERACTIVE DASHBOARD TO EACH PRINCIPAL TO IDENTIFY AREAS OF NEEDED ATTENTION AND AREAS OF CELEBRATION AS THEY HEAD INTO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR.
IN MAY WE SHARED A DRAFT OF LCAP WITH THE TEAM AND TONIGHT SHARING THE INPUT FROM ADVISORY GROUPS AND QUICK DRAFT OF LCAP PRIOR TO THE MEETING SCHEDULED IN JUNE.
THE LCAP DEVELOPMENT AND REVIEW IS A THREE-YEAR PROCESS, AND IN YEAR TWO WHERE WE REVIEW AND ANALYZE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GOALS AND ACTIONS. MINOR CHANGES MAY OCCUR AND NO CHANGES MADE TO LCAP IN NEXT YEAR AND SIMULTANEOUSLY BUILDING IN THE YEAR THREE OF LCAP. CURRENT HAS FOUR GOALS AND THE GOAL FOCUS AND THE ACTION RELATED TO THE GOALS AND THE BOTTOM OF THE TABLE THE STATE PRIORITIES ALIGNED TO THAT GOAL.
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WE ENGAGE OUR PARTNERS IN IN-DEPTH REVIEW OF DATA MEASUREMENT. AND IMPACT OF ACTIONS AND SOLICITED FEEDBACK OF WHAT IS WORKING AND WHAT SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT. EACH ADVISORY GROUP ALSO HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW THE SUMMARY OF FEEDBACK FROM ALL ADVISORY GROUPS. BECAUSE THEN THEY FORCE BOARD MEMBERS TO MAKE RIDICULOUS STATEMENTS. SO PLEASE VOTE PROPERLY.

I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS YEAR AND ENDING THE YEAR ON A POSITIVE NOTE AND WORKING TOGETHER BECAUSE WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO. AND ON THAT NOTE I THINK WHAT I SEE ON THIS BOARD, AND WHAT I WANT THE TAKEAWAY TO BE IS, WE ARE EXTREMELY DEDICATED TO MOVING THIS DISTRICT FORWARD, AND WE KNOW WHAT WE HAVE TO DO AND WE KNOW THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS THAT HAVE TO GET DONE OVER THE NEXT YEAR, AND ALL OF US WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE DOING EVERYTHING PERFECT TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS A SUCCESS. BECAUSE WE SEE THE NEEDS ESPECIALLY SAW THE PRESENTATION FOR THE MASTER PLAN.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE DO IT RIGHT.

I HAVE NOT STOPPED LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE DAY.SO JUST A COUPLE OF HIGHLIGHTS I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL'S AWARD CEREMONY. VERY NICE.
AS WELL. BECAUSE WE ARE NOW SAYING GOODBYE TO ONE CLASS BUT ALSO EXCITED FOR THEM TO BEGIN THEIR NEW, YOU KNOW, JOURNEY THROUGH THEIR NEWEGG CONNECT LIFE OR JUST LIFE ITSELF. ALSO ATTENDED BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL'S AWARDS CEREMONY. FELT THE SAME WAY VERY HAPPY THAT THEY ARE NOW ABLE TO JOIN THE ADULTS IN MAKING THEIR OWN DECISIONS AND HAVING THE LITTLE BIT OF FREEDOMS. I'M PRETTY SURE THEY WANT TO HAVE THEM.
AT THIS POINT. AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE GRADUATIONS. IT'S ALWAYS LIKE I SAY I COME FULL CIRCLE AS A TEACHER. WE GET TO SEE THE YOUNG ONES, AND I AM ABLE IN THIS THIS POSITION TO KIND OF FOLLOW THEM AND SEE WHERE THEY END UP AFTER 12, 13 YEARS.
BUT THIS ONE IS ESPECIALLY MEMORABLE AND EMOTIONAL FOR ME.
BECAUSE I AS A TEACHER THE AISLE SEE AN TEACHER TO MANY OF THOSE STUDENTS WHO NEXT YEAR WILL BE GRADUATING, I TAUGHT THEM.
I WILL BE ABLE NEXT YEAR TO GIVE THEM THEIR DIPLOMA, AND TO FEEL HOW EMPOWERED THEY ARE AND SEE THEM GO DOWN THE RAMP.
SO READY TO MEET THOSE CHALLENGES IN THE WORLD.
THERE'S NO WORDS BUT I ALSO FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT YOUR CLASS.
BECAUSE YOU GUYS WERE THE PIONEERS.
YOU AND YOUR PARENTS WENT THROUGH SO MUCH.
I KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS WENT THROUGH.
EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT YOUR TEACHER.
I SAW WHAT YOUR PARENTS AND YOUR FAMILIES AND THAT COMMUNITY WENT THROUGH. IT WAS NOT EASY.
AND TO THE TEACHERS WHO ARE STILL THERE, AND THE TEACHERS THAT WENT THROUGH THAT CHANGE, AND THE WAY THAT IT WAS PRESENTED TO THEM, AND PLACED UPON THEM, I AM SO PROUD OF THOSE TEACHERS. IT WASN'T EASY.
BECAUSE WE KNOW WHAT IT TOOK TO GET THOSE KIDS THROUGH, AND IT'S SUCH A REWARDING FEELING TO SEE THEM ALL WALK AND HAVE THESE EXCEPTIONAL QUALITIES IN THEM. SO THAT'S MORE OF A PERSONAL LIKE A POINT THAT I WANTED TO MAKE.
BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JUST ADDING SO MUCH INFORMATION TO OUR DECISIONS. WE APPRECIATE YOU.
