TODAY'S MEETING REFLECTS THAT BROADER COMMITMENT, AND WE'RE JOINED BY A STRONG GROUP OF PRESENTERS WHO ARE HELPING MOVE THIS WORK FORWARD. WE'LL BEGIN WITH AN UPDATE FROM MS, UH, FROM THE ECOS SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE, LED BY MR. CRYSTALS CLIO, OUR CHIEF ECOS SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER, WHO WILL WALK US THROUGH KEY INITIATIVES ACROSS ENERGY WASTE, GREENING TRANSPORTATION, ELECTRIFICATION, CLIMATE LITERACY, AND WILDFIRE RESILIENCE. I KNOW HE HAS A LOT OF UPDATES FOR US, SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THE LATEST FROM MY ECO SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE. YEAH, THE FLOOR IS YOURS. SURE. BOARD PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBER, UH, NEW BILL, AND TO OUR COMMITTEE MEMBERS, MR. MCLEAN. THANK YOU. IT'S A PLEASURE TO BE HERE PRESENTING TO YOU AND PROVIDING YOUR UPDATES. THE LAST FEW DAYS HAVE BEEN VERY EXCITING IN TERMS OF SEEING SOME OF THE PROGRESS. UH, YESTERDAY I ATTENDED A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY TO ONE OF OUR GREEN SCHOOL YEARS. THIS MORNING WE'RE AT THE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR RUN OF OUR TRANSPORTATION SITES. SO IT'S EXCITING TO BE SHARING AND PROVIDING YOU UPDATES THROUGHOUT OUR E SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE. SO, TODAY I'M GONNA BE PROVIDING UPDATES AND I'M GONNA BE FOCUSING ON SPECIFIC AREAS. I'M GONNA GIVE YOU UPDATES ON THE L-A-D-W-P, THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER POWER, AND THE L-A-U-S-D-M-O-U. I'LL BE SHARING INFORMATION ABOUT THE ENERGY SAVINGS AND MANAGEMENT THAT WE'RE APPLYING AND HOW WE'RE ABLE TO CREATE MORE EFFICIENCY ON OUR SCHOOLS. I'LL BE TALKING ABOUT OUR RECYCLED WATER IRRIGATION PROGRAM, CAMPUS ECOLOGY, TRANSPORTATION, ELECTRIFICATION, HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS, CLIMATE LITERACY, WELFARE RESILIENCY, AND I'LL BE SHARING AND SHOWCASING SOME OF OUR RECENT PRESENTATIONS AND HOW WE'RE SHARING BEST PRACTICES AND LEARNING FROM THE INDUSTRY. AND THEN I'M GONNA BE CLOSING WITH SOME OF THE NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT WE HAVE. SO LET'S JUST START, UH, FOCUSING ON THE PRIORITY PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE IN DEVELOPMENT. OUR FIRST, UH, PROGRAM, UH, IN TERMS OF RESILIENCY, UH, AND WHAT WE'RE PILOTING, WHAT WE ARE CALLING THE ENERGY AND WA WATER COMMAND CONTROL CENTER. THIS IS A NEW INITIATIVE THAT WE'VE, UH, WE ARE DEVELOPING. WE'RE IN THE BEGINNING, EARLY STAGES, AND WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH SOME OF THE DEVELOPERS TO HELP US OUT. WHAT THIS IS GONNA BE. IT'S GONNA BE A SYSTEM THAT WE CAN CENTRALIZE, LOOK AT ALL OF OUR UTILITIES THROUGHOUT ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS. WE'LL BE ABLE TO LOOK AT, UM, IN TERMS OF PRODUCTION, WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO SEE ANOMALIES IN TERMS OF HOW THEY'RE BEHAVING, IN TERMS OF THE ENERGY AND WATER. WE'LL BE ABLE TO THEN WORK WITH OUR FACILITIES AND MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS TO DISPATCH, AND SO WE CAN CREATE, BE ABLE TO PROVIDE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS ON OUR SCHOOLS. I FORESEE THAT THIS PROGRAM ALONE IS GONNA BE ABLE TO SAVE THE SCHOOL [00:05:01] DISTRICT APPROXIMATELY 20% IN TERMS OF THE UTILITY BILLS. SO IT'S A GREAT BIG INITIATIVE. WE'RE LOOKING OR LOOKING AT IT IN GREAT DETAIL, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING IT IMPLEMENTED. UM, I WOULD SAY BY THE END OF THE YEAR AT, AT THE LATEST. THE OTHER ONE IS THE MICROGRIDS. MICROGRIDS IS SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING FOR A LONG TIME. WE ARE TRYING TO IMPLEMENT ON OUR SCHOOLS. WE IMPLEMENTING ON SOME OF OUR SCHOOLS RIGHT NOW AT A SMALL SCALE, BUT I WANT TO GO BIGGER SCALE. I WANNA BE ABLE TO HAVE TO DEVELOP THESE MICROGRID CENTERS. UM, WE WERE DISCUSSING THIS MORNING AT THE, UH, SUN VALLEY, UH, THE BUZZARD. WE DO HAVE A MIC. WE'RE GONNA BE INSTALLING A MICROGRID THERE. UM, IT'S GONNA BE, UH, IT'S GONNA BE FUNCTIONING, UH, WITHIN A YEAR'S TIME, BUT I'M ALSO WANT TO DEVELOP THOSE IN SOME OF OUR SCHOOLS. LIKE I SAID, WE'RE, HAVE IT IN SMALL SCALE, BUT WANNA BE ABLE TO CREATE MORE RESILIENCE IN OUR SCHOOLS. AND THEN WITHIN, WITHIN THE MOU, SOME OF THE AREAS THAT WE'RE FOCUSING, IT'S OUR GREEN PROGRAMS. THE GREEN PROGRAMS. WE ALLOCATE ABOUT 2.25 BILLION ANNUALLY. AND THEN WE'RE LOOKING AT OPPORTUNITIES TO BE ABLE TO INCREASE, UH, SHADE. UH, DEFINITELY TO PLANT MORE, MORE TREES BY PLANTING MORE TREES, BUT ALSO TO BE ABLE TO CREATE MORE PERMEABILITY ON OUR SCHOOLS. WE'RE LOOKING INTO DEVELOPING NEW CONCEPTS THAT WE'VE, UH, FOUND VERY FAVORABLE AND THEY'RE WORKING WELL, LIKE THE MICRO FOREST, UH, CONCEPT. AND, AND THE MOST RECENTLY THAT WE HAVE COMPLETED, UH, THE SCHOOL YEAR FOREST, THAT, UH, IT'S GONNA HELP US ACCELERATE GRID ON OUR SCHOOL SITES WITH VERY LITTLE COST. AND WE, THAT CAN BE DONE VERY FAIRLY QUICKLY IN TERMS OF WATER CONSERVATION. UH, WE'RE LOOKING AT THE DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES. WE'RE LOOKING AT LEAK DETECTION. THIS IS WHERE WE'RE ABLE TO IDENTIFY IF WE HAVE ON OUR IRRIGATION SYSTEMS MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE. UM, I WOULD SAY MOST OF THE, MOST OF THE WATERING THAT WE HAVE IS, UH, THROUGH IRRIGATION. SO WE'RE TRYING TO IDENTIFY TO ENSURE THAT IF THERE IS A LEAK SOMEWHERE, AT LEAST WE GET NOTIFIED AND WE CAN BE ABLE TO CORRECT IT IMMEDIATELY. SO WE'RE DOING THAT BY ALSO ADDING SMART IRRIGATION CONTROLLERS, UM, SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO AUTOMATE THE WATERING, UH, UH, ON THOSE SPECIFIC SITES. AND THEREFORE, TO SAVE WATER. WE'RE ALSO, WE'RE LOOKING AT A LOT OF THE EDUCATIONAL AWARENESS PROGRAMS, AND THAT'S, UH, WHAT IDENTIFIED ABOUT 1.1 TO 5 MILLION FOR THAT PROGRAM. AND, UH, AND WE WE'RE HAVING MANY, MANY PROJECTS, UM, THAT WILL DEVELOP PARTNERSHIPS TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE. UM, THE, THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, WE'RE ACTUALLY WORKING WITH A REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS TO BE ABLE TO ENGAGE SOME OF THOSE COMPANIES TO HELP SUPPORT US IN THOSE EFFORTS. AND THEN THE, THE BIGGEST, UH, PART OF THIS MOU IS THE DIRECT INSTALL, THE LIGHTING RETROFIT PROGRAM, AS WE CALL IT, THE REPLACEMENT WITH LED FIXTURES. THAT'S A PROGRAM WE HAVE BEEN, IT'S BEEN ONGOING NOW FOR ALMOST A DECADE AT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WORKING WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER POWER. BUT THE GOOD THING IS THAT WE'VE, UH, WE'RE ACCELERATING THIS PROGRAM. WE PUT MORE MONEY. THIS IS WHERE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS INVESTING 20 MILLION OUT OF BOND FUNDS. AND, UH, $80 MILLION, UH, IS INVESTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER POWER. AND, UH, I CAN TELL YOU, SINCE WE STARTED THIS MOU SINCE OCTOBER OF LAST YEAR, WE HAVE, UH, ADDED 41 SCHOOL SITES. WE HAVE EIGHT PROJECTS THAT WERE COMPLETED TO DATE. AND, UH, AND THOSE PROJECTS ITSELF, UH, ONCE WE FINISH THE 41 THAT WE'VE, UH, ADDED IN THE EIGHT, THEY'RE GONNA GIVE US ABOUT 4.9, CLOSE TO 5 MILLION KILOWATT HOURS, POTEN POTENTIAL SAVINGS. THAT IS ACTUALLY, UM, CLOSE TO 1.25 MILLION SAVINGS FROM OUR UTILITY ACCOUNTS. SO ALL THESE ARE VERY GOOD PROGRAMS FOR US, AND WE'RE GONNA CONTINUE TO ACCELERATE THESE PROGRAMS BECAUSE WE CAN SEE THE REAL BENEFIT. WE CAN SEE HOW MUCH MONEY WE CAN BE SAVING, UH, TOWARDS OUR UTILITIES, OUT OF OUR GENERAL FUNDS, SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO PUT 'EM, UM, IN, IN, IN, IN, TO HELP BENEFIT OUR SCHOOLS IN OTHER WAYS. AND THEN WE'RE LOOKING AT ENERGY SAVINGS AND MANAGEMENT HERE. WHAT I WANTED TO SHOWCASE AND SHARE WITH YOU IS THE, UH, AN ACTUAL CONTRACT THAT WE HAVE, UH, EXECUTED RECENTLY, UH, THE, WITH THE CONSTELLATION. AND THIS ONE IS GONNA HELP US, UM, SAVE APPROXIMATELY $3.6 MILLION IN TERMS OF ANNUAL COST AVOIDANCE. THAT IS BECAUSE WE'RE ABLE TO LOG IN A FAVORABLE RATE. YOU CAN SEE THE, UH, THE CONTRACT AT 8 CENTS PER KILOWATT HOUR VERSUS WHAT WE'RE PAYING TODAY AT 12 CENTS PER KILOWATT HOUR. AND THEN WE'RE CONTINUING THROUGH, UH, A PROGRAM WITH THE, WITH THE SO-CALLED GAS TO BE REPLACING, UH, AGING NATURAL GAS WATER HEATERS WITH MORE EFFICIENT ONES. AND WE REPLACE 63, AND THAT'S GONNA GIVE US ABOUT 80,000, UH, ESTIMATED ANNUAL UTILITY COST SAVINGS. SO, AND THEN WE'RE CONTINUING WITH OTHER IDEAS AND CONCEPTS. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE VERY PROUD TO SHARE, AND THAT TOOK A LOT OF COLLABORATION BETWEEN, UM, OUR ECO SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE AND OUR FACILITIES TEAM. THAT IS THE, THE ACTUAL, UH, THE 21 SOLAR PROJECTS THAT WE'VE IDENTIFIED. WE, UH, MADE SURE WE HAD MEETINGS WITH OUR DEVELOPERS, AND WE ARE ABLE TO, UH, SECURE THE INVESTMENT TAX CREDIT IN THE AMOUNT OF ESTIMATED $40 MILLION SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO REINVEST IN MORE SOLAR [00:10:01] ON OUR PROJECTS. NOW, WE'RE NOT GONNA BE ABLE TO REALIZE THESE FUNDS, UM, UNTIL WE COMPLETE THE PROJECTS. BUT THE, THE GREAT THING ABOUT THIS IS THAT WE MADE SURE THAT WE PURCHASED THE, THE PANELS. YOU'RE GONNA SEE A PHOTOGRAPH LATER ON THAT SHOWS WHERE THOSE ARE, UH, BEING, UM, LOCATED TO BE ABLE, AGAIN, TO BENEFIT BY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE INVESTMENT TAX RATE. AT THE SAME TIME, YOU CAN SEE ONE OF THE, UH, PROPOSED TYPE PLAN, UH, AT, UH, JOHN, UH, SATURN MIDDLE SCHOOL. YOU CAN SEE WHERE WE'RE INSTALLING SOME OF THOSE, UH, SOME OF THOSE STRUCTURES. SOME OF THEM ARE, UH, SOLAR PANELS ON SHADE STRUCTURES TO PROVIDE SHADE FOR OUR STUDENTS AS WELL. SOME OF THEM ARE CARPORTS THAT WE'RE PUTTING WITHIN THE PARKING AREA, BUT WE'RE TRYING TO COME UP, COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS, OR WE COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS INITIALLY, UH, THAT CAN HELP SUPPORT TO PROVIDE SHADE ON OUR SCHOOLS, AND AT THE SAME TIME, UH, BE ABLE TO, TO CREATE ENERGY OUT OF THOSE SYSTEMS. ANOTHER, UH, ANOTHER EXCITING PILOT THAT I WANTED TO SHOWCASE TO YOU, AND THIS IS ACTUALLY QUITE, QUITE EXCITING. IT'S SOMETHING THAT ALIGNED WITH THE ENERGY AND WATER COMMAND CONTROL CENTER. AND WHY THIS IS EXCITING IS BECAUSE THIS IS A NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT THIS TECHNOLOGY FOR SEVERAL YEARS RIGHT NOW. AND IT'S ONLY RECENTLY THAT WE'RE ABLE TO, UM, THROUGH DISCUSSIONS AND WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO ACHIEVE, THAT THE ENERGY POWER RESOURCE INSTITUTE OF AMERICA ERI. UM, SO THE, HOW WE CAN COLLABORATE. SO WE DID WORK TOGETHER. WE APPLIED FOR THE GRANT. IT WAS A $2.6 MILLION GRANT. AND, AND THE GREAT THING ABOUT THIS, UM, IT'S, IT'S GONNA DIRECTLY BENEFIT OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT BY IDENTIFYING TWO SITES. WE IDENTIFY THE MAYWOOD CENTER FOR ENRICHED STUDIES AND THE MAYWOOD ACADEMY THAT HAD TO BE WITHIN SPECIFIC UTILITY AREA. BUT WHAT WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE IS THAT WE ARE INSTALLING THIS GATEWAY, THIS EDO TECHNOLOGY. THIS TECHNOLOGY IS GONNA TAKE ALL OF OUR SYSTEMS, TAKE THE INFORMATION FROM THE SYSTEMS, LIKE THE ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, THE LIGHTING SYSTEMS, THE SOLAR SYSTEMS, THE EV CHARGING. SO ANY TECHNOLOGIES THAT WE HAVE IS GONNA PUT 'EM WITHIN THAT BOX. AND THAT BOX ITSELF IS GONNA HELP US TO DO ANALYTICS. AND IT'S GONNA BE ABLE TO DO REAL TIME TO BE ABLE TO, TO UNDERSTAND OUR, HOW WE'RE USING OUR ENERGY, AND BEING ABLE TO, TO GIVE US COST SAVINGS BY DOING DEMAND FLEXIBILITY BY WORKING WITH THE GRID AND SUPPORTING THE GRID WHEN THEY HAVE, IN TERMS OF WHEN THEY'RE HAVING, UH, YOU KNOW, BLACKOUTS OR ANY TIMES THAT THEY NEED MORE ENERGY. BUT IN MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, IT'S GONNA HELP OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT SAVE MONEY. THIS IS GONNA ACT LIKE THE ENERGY AND WATER COMMAND CONTROL CENTER THAT I WAS SHARING. SO AS WE'RE DOING THIS IN PARALLEL WITH THE ENERGY AND WATER COMMAND CONTROL CENTER, THIS TECHNOLOGY, ONCE WE PILOTED THE PLAN, IS TO START IMPLEMENTING THROUGHOUT ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS. SO IT'S SOMETHING THAT, UH, IS, IS TODAY LATEST TECHNOLOGY IS VERY SOPHISTICATED. WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH OUR FACILITIES TEAM WITH MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS. WE'VE BEEN GOING TO THE SITE, IDENTIFYING ALL THE EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES, DOING THE ANALYSIS, AND NOW WE'RE IN THE, UH, IN THE POINT OF STARTING TO IMPLEMENT THE TECHNOLOGY OF GETTING ANALYTICS, UNDERSTANDING HOW THE BUILDINGS ARE BEHAVING, AND THEN START IMPLEMENTING, UH, SAVING, SAVING, UH, UH, SOLUTIONS. THE, UH, THE IDEA THAT WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO FINISH THIS WITHIN A YEAR'S TIME, AND THEN IT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED THROUGHOUT. AND THEN, IN TERMS OF OUR RECYCLED WATER PROGRAM, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH L-A-D-W-P NOW FOR, I WOULD SAY AT LEAST SIX TO EIGHT YEARS. AND WHILE WE'RE BUILDING THE PROCESS, WE HAVE SOME RECYCLED WATER ON SOME OF OUR SITES. YOU'RE PROBABLY GONNA SEE THE PURPLE PIPE INSTALLED, BUT WE'RE MOST RECENTLY, I INSTALL INSTALLED ONE AT THE EAST VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL. AND WE'RE EXCITED THAT WE HAD THAT INSTALLATION. IT WENT VERY WELL. UM, WE FUNDED SOME OF THOSE INSTALLATIONS THROUGH OUR, UH, ECOS SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE BECAUSE WE FELT THAT THEY'RE VERY IMPORTANT IN TERMS OF THE COST AVOIDANCE AND TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RECYCLED WATER TODAY, BECAUSE I CAN TELL YOU THAT A YEAR, TWO YEARS FROM NOW, THINGS WILL BE CHANGING. THE RECYCLED WATER IS NOT GONNA BE AS AVAILABLE, UM, TO, AS IT IS TODAY IN TERMS OF THE RATES THAT WE'RE PAYING TO L-A-D-W-P. SO, UM, WE'RE ALSO PLANNING AT FOUR ADDITIONAL SITES. SO YOU CAN SEE THE SITES UP THERE THAT WE HAVE UP THERE. SO WE'RE LOOKING AT IT TO INSTALL AT, AT GARDENA HIGH SCHOOL, UH, FULTON COLLEGE PREP AT WESTCHESTER IN RICH, UH, SCIENCES MAGNET. AND AT NORTH HOLLYWOOD HIGH SCHOOL, THIS IS GONNA HELP US, UM, SAVE APPROXIMATELY 40 MILLION GALLONS OF POTABLE WATER. AND WHEN WE LOOK AT THE ACTUAL SAVINGS, ONCE WE FINISH THESE FIVE SITES, WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO HAVE A COST AVOIDANCE OF 840,000, UH, DOLLARS FROM OUR UTILITY ACCOUNT. AND I THINK IT, IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE NOTICE AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING, BECAUSE I WANTED TO AT LEAST, YOU KNOW, JUST SHARE WITH YOU A LOT OF THESE PROJECTS THAT SOMETIMES THEY'RE HAPPENING AND, AND THEY'RE NOT GETTING A LOT OF ATTENTION. BUT THIS IS WHY WE'RE TRYING TO KEEP OUR UTILITY BILLS AS LOW AS WE CAN. AND THEN WE'VE, UH, WE'RE GONNA PROCEED INTO CAMPUS ECOLOGY. WHAT YOU'RE SEEING HERE IS, UH, WHEN WE LOOK AT THE, UH, OBVIOUSLY THE RESOLUTION THAT PASSED IN 2022 TO CONVERT 30% OF EVERY SCHOOL YARD IN THE DISTRICT TO PERMEABLE GREEN SPACES BY 2035. AND SO WE HAVE A BASELINE HERE OF 2324 THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT THAT 672 SITES, AND WE'RE SEEING WHAT WE ARE IN [00:15:01] TERMS OF TO DATE. SO ONLY 16% MEET THAT GOAL. WE HAVE ANOTHER 50% THAT, UM, THE CLOSER TO THAT GOAL IS THERE OVER 10% COVERAGE, AND WE HAVE ANOTHER 34 TO GO. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, THAT WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK AHEAD OF US? THE GOOD THING IS THAT WE HAVE OVER 160 PROJECTS RIGHT NOW BETWEEN PLANNING, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, BETWEEN THE EFFORTS THAT WE HAVE, BETWEEN THE E SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE, WITH OUR PARTNERSHIPS, OUR FACILITIES SERVICES DIVISION. WE HAVE A LOT OF, A LOT OF PROJECTS IN THE WORKS. YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOGRAPHS, UH, HOW INCREDIBLE THEY ARE. ONCE WE REMOVE, UH, THE EXISTING ASPHALT AND WE, UH, COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS THAT REALLY PRO PROVIDE US BETTER ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS FOR OUR SCHOOLS, FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND CERTAINLY ANYONE WHO USES OUR, OUR SCHOOL SITES. SO OUR THIRD PARTY PROGRAMS ARE CONTINUING, AND WE HAVE ABOUT 52 PROJECTS THAT, UH, THEY HAVE A CURRENT VALUE OF $60 MILLION. AND, UH, WE CONTINUE TO STREAMLINE THE PROCESSES BY DEVELOPING AND MEETING WITH OUR PARTNERSHIPS AND, AND REALLY HELPING OUT AS MUCH AS WE CAN BASED ON, UH, THE INFORMATION OR AVAILABLE FUNDING THAT WE HAVE, THE $3 MILLION FUNDING, THAT THE BOARD APPROVAL THAT THE BOARD APPROVED HAS BEEN ALLOCATED TO OUR PROJECTS TO BE ABLE TO HELP, TO HELP SUPPORT THOSE PROJECTS. UM, SO YOU CAN SEE THE UPDATE IN TERMS OF HOW MANY PROJECTS WE HAVE BUDGETED, HOW MANY WERE COMPLETED. WE HAVE ONLY ONE COMPLETED. UM, THERE'S ANOTHER SCHOOL YARD WE'RE GONNA BE DISCUSSING LATER PROJECT THAT WAS, UH, FINISHED OUT OF THE CER, BUT A DIFFERENT CRA GRANT. WE HAVE FOREIGN CONSTRUCTION AND ITIN PRE-CONSTRUCTION AND NINE PRODUCTS ON WHOLE. AND THERE'S SOME CHALLENGES. THERE'S SOME REAL CHALLENGES THAT WE'RE FACING. AND SOME OF THESE CHALLENGES ARE, AND WE'RE DISCUSSING INTERNALLY THE ENVIRONMENTAL SITE CONDITIONS. WE'RE SEEING A LOT OF CHALLENGES IN TERMS OF, UH, THE COST AND THE TIME THAT IT TAKES TO IMPLEMENT SOME OF THOSE CHALLENGES THAT WE'RE FACING. WE'RE SEEING, UH, THE DISTRICT FEES THAT, UH, OUR PARTNERS HAVE TO PAY OR DEAL WITH OUT OF THE GROUND THAT THEY HAVE. AND, UH, COST ESCALATION DURING CONSTRUCTION. SOME OF THESE PROJECTS THAT WERE APPROVED TWO YEARS AGO, THEY'RE ALREADY, UH, FACING COST ESCALATION BECAUSE CONSTRUCTION KEEPS GOING UP, I'LL SAY FIVE, 10% AT LEAST THE LAST FEW YEARS. SO, UM, OUR PARTNERS HAVE REACHED OUT TO THE BON OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE TO BE ABLE TO USE BOND FUNDS. THEY'VE, UH, REACHED OUT TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. THEY'VE REACHED OUT TO US, OBVIOUSLY, OVER AND OVER AGAIN FOR THE LAST YEAR. SO WE'RE DISCUSSING INTERNALLY TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO ADVANCE THE WORK THAT WE HAVE WITH OUR THIRD PARTY GREENING PARTNERS, BECAUSE WE HIGHLY VALUE THE WORK THAT THEY DO WITH THEM. WE CAN REALLY DO SO MUCH MORE THAN WE CAN DO BY OURSELVES. SO REALLY VALUE THEIR WORK. WE ARE DISCUSSING WITH THEM. WE UNDERSTAND THE ISSUES, THEIR CHALLENGES, THEY'RE REAL, AND WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CAN, TOGETHER WE CAN ADDRESS THEM AND MOVE TOWARDS GREENING PROJECTS. LIKE YOU'RE SEEING UP HERE, THE 120 SECOND STREET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MICRO FOREST PROJECT, A PROJECT THAT WAS DISCUSSED A FEW YEARS AGO, AND IT TOOK UP, IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY, UM, I WOULD SAY SEVEN, SEVEN TO EIGHT MONTHS IN, IN CONSTRUCTION. IT WAS COMPLETED LAST NOVEMBER. IT'S AN EXCITING PROJECT BECAUSE WHEN WE FIRST WERE APPROACHED BY, UH, GREEN SCHOOL, YEARS OF AMERICA, IT, TO ME, IT WAS VERY DEAR IN TERMS OF WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH HERE. WE CALLED IT A PILOT BECAUSE WE'RE TRYING DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES. WE'RE TRYING TO FIND DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS. AND THROUGH THIS COLLABORATION, AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT WE HAD A FEW CHALLENGES. THROUGH DISCUSSIONS, WE'RE ABLE TO CREATE THIS MICRO FOREST, WHICH WE HAVE 44 TREES. UH, WE HAVE 1 24, UM, UNDERSTORY PLANTS, LOWER PLANTS. AND, UH, WE WERE ABLE TO INPUT, UH, PUT THE DE COMPOST GRANITE WITH A MULCH, YOU CAN SEE, AND WITH SOME SEEDING AREAS. BUT WHAT WAS IMPORTANT AND HOW WE'RE ABLE TO ACHIEVE THIS PROJECT, THIS PROJECT COST, UM, IT WAS A $340,000 GRANT THROUGH THE KAFI GRANT. AND THE DISTRICT PUT, UH, APPROXIMATELY 17,000 THROUGH THE 3 MILLION MARCHING SHARE THAT WE HAD. SO, UH, A $357,000 PROJECT WAS ABLE TO DEVELOP A 12,000 SQUARE FOOT OF AN AREA AND DEVELOPED THIS BEAUTIFUL, UM, I WILL SAY MOCK, UH, THIS FOREST THAT EVENTUALLY YOU SEE NOW THE SIZE OF THE TREES. BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS, AGAIN, THREE, FIVE YEARS FROM NOW, IT'S GONNA BE A BEAUTIFUL FOREST THAT OUR KIDS CAN BE ABLE TO EXPERIENCE. THEY CAN BE ABLE TO REALLY SPEND TIME OUTSIDE THE SPACES FOR 'EM TO SEE IT AND LEARN ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT. SO WE'RE ABLE TO, TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN BY REALLY ELIMINATING SOME OF THE CHALLENGES THAT WE FACE. FOR EXAMPLE, YOU KNOW, THE, THE, THE HEADERS BETWEEN THE COMPOSED GROUND AND PLANTING AREAS. THAT'S SOMETHING THAT OUR STANDARDS REQUIRED, AND WE FOUND THAT THAT WAS UNNECESSARY. WHEN YOU GO TO A FOREST, YOU DON'T SEE CONCRETE SEPARATIONS BETWEEN MATERIALS AND NATURAL MATERIALS. THE, THE, THE PLANET ITSELF HAS THE BEST SOLUTIONS [00:20:01] FOR US. SO THINKING OUT AND, AND COMING UP WITH SOLUTIONS AND, AND SEEING HOW, HOW WILL NATURE REACT? WHAT'S, WHAT ARE THE BEST SOLUTIONS THAT WE CAN DO ON THOSE PROJECT SITES TO AT LEAST TEST THEM AND PILOT THEM OUT OF THIS? AND WE DID. AND WHAT YOU'RE SEEING HERE, IT'S A SUCCESSFUL PILOT THAT WE DID, THAT WE IMPLEMENTED. UM, IT'S BEEN NOW, UM, THERE FOR AT LEAST I WOULD SAY ALMOST FIVE, SIX MONTHS, WE HAD SOME, UH, UH, EXTREME, UH, WEATHER, AS YOU CAN RECALL, THE PAST FEW MONTHS, MOSTLY WHEN WE HAVE THE, THE, THE RAINFALL THAT WE WERE ABLE TO GET IN CALIFORNIA, THE FLOODING THAT WE'VE SEEN, IT WAS ABLE TO WITHSTAND ALL THAT AND STILL STAY IMPACT LIKE THIS. SO FOR US, WE ASK OUR DESIGN STANDARDS AND, AND OUR, OUR FRIENDS WITH THE, THE FACILITIES TEAM THAT WE NEED TO STANDARDIZE THESE DETAILS. WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO AVOID UNNECESSARY COSTS AND PUT 'EM BACK INTO THE PROJECT. SO WE'RE CONTINUING WITH SOLUTIONS LIKE THIS. UM, ALSO SOLUTIONS THAT WE'RE SEEING, SEPARATION BETWEEN ASPHALT AND THE, UH, AND SOME OF THE PLANNING THAT WE HAVE, BUT THE USE OF LOTS INSTEAD OF HAVING THE CURVES. SO WE'VE IDENTIFIED, UM, DIFFERENT DETAILS, UM, OF HOW TO BE ABLE TO AT LEAST ACHIEVE, UM, I WOULD SAY EVEN A BETTER OUTCOME, UH, IN TERMS OF HAVING THIS, UH, TYPE OF A FOREST ON OUR SCHOOLS. AND THIS IS A GREAT BENEFIT TO OUR STUDENTS. AND I WAS, UH, REALLY, UH, IMPRESSED BY PRINCIPALS MEET AT THIS SCHOOL SITE WHEN SHE SHARED TO ME YESTERDAY, AND WE'VE DISCUSSED THIS BEFORE, THE FOREST RANGER PROGRAM, WHERE SHE ENGAGED THE STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN AND CLEAN SOME OF THE SCHOOLS. NOW THIS COMES WITH AN AGREEMENT AND THE, UH, AND OUR TEAMS HERE, AS THEY WILL BE PRESENTING AFTER ME, THEY WILL SHARING HOW THEY'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THE MAINTENANCE OF THIS PROJECT. 'CAUSE IT COMES WITH THE MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS. BUT THE GREAT THING IS THAT THE TEAM DID AN INCREDIBLE JOB OF DEVELOPING THIS PROJECT. WE HAVE STUDENTS PARTICIPATING, ENGAGING, LEARNING FROM THIS, AND THEN MAINTAINING. AND THEN WE HAVE OUR PARTNERSHIPS THAT WILL CONTINUE, THAT WILL CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN IN THIS FOR FEW YEARS, TO ENSURE THAT, UH, PROPER GROWTH TO OUR, UM, TO OUR FOREST. SO A VERY EXCITING PROJECT AS WE MOVE FORWARD. NOW I'M GONNA SWITCH TO OUR TRANSPORTATION AND TRANSPORTATION ELECTRIFICATION. ANOTHER AREA THAT WE'RE REALLY EXCITED, I MENTIONED EARLIER THIS MORNING, I WAS HONORED TO BE AT THE, AT THE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR ME, A VISION THAT WE SHARED OVER THREE YEARS AGO. A VISION THAT THIS BOARD, UM, AND BOARD PRESIDENT, YOU KNOW, ABOUT FIVE, SIX YEARS AGO, YOU PASSED A RESOLUTION THAT EVERYBODY SUPPORTED YOU, ALL OUR BOARD MEMBERS SUPPORTED IT TO CREATE, TO HAVE CLEAN ELECTRICITY BY 2030 AND CLEAN ENERGY IN ALL SECTORS BY 2040. WELL, THIS IS, UH, ONE OF THE PROJECTS THAT'S GONNA HELP US GET THERE WITH THIS PROJECT. THIS, THIS, I WILL SAY IT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST SCHOOL BUSES IN, I WOULD SAY THE WEST COAST, BUT THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. SO THIS IS GONNA SERVE, UM, US A MODEL, AND I WOULD SAY A NATIONAL MODEL FOR A LOT, BECAUSE I'VE BEEN SPEAKING ABOUT THESE PROJECTS, THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY. I'VE BEEN SPEAKING TO A LOT OF DIFFERENT ASSOCIATIONS ABOUT THE WORK, LAZY, UH, THE CITY. SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO SHOWCASE AND SHARE WHAT WE LEARN OUT OF THIS SCHOOL SO WE CAN CONTINUE ADVANCING TRANSPORTATION, ELECTRIFICATION. 'CAUSE THE BENEFITS ARE TREMENDOUS. THE BENEFITS OUT OF THIS, ONCE WE HAVE THE, YOU KNOW, WE ALREADY PURCHASED THE 200 BUSES, WHICH IS, UH, 180 BUSES, SORRY, OUT OF, FOR THIS ONE HERE, WE WE'RE ABLE TO DECOMMISSION 30 FOSSIL FUEL BUSES AND 150 CNG BUSES, A TOTAL OF 180. WE'RE INSTALLING CLOSE TO 200 CHARGING STATIONS WITH THE, SOME OF THE, UH, CHARGING STATIONS. WE ALSO INSTALLING THERE FOR A WIDE FLEET. AND, AND THE GREAT THING ABOUT THIS PROJECT, IT COMBINES A SOLAR, UH, BATTERY STORAGE, A HALF A MEGAWATT OF A SOLAR, HALF A MEGAWATT OF BATTERY STORAGE INTO A MICROGRID. OUR STUDENTS RIGHT NEXT DOOR, THEY'LL BE BENEFITING BY ALL THIS. WE'VE ALREADY STARTED THE ENGAGEMENT. WE'RE HAVING PROGRAMS. WE, BETWEEN OUR CONTRACTOR, OUR FACILITIES TEAM, THE SCHOOL WILL BE MEETING WITH THE SCHOOL SHARING, UM, SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO ENGAGE OUR STUDENTS. 'CAUSE THEY HAVE SPECIFIC PROGRAMS IN ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE. AND WE'RE ENGAGING 'EM TO LEARN ABOUT HOW THESE SYSTEMS OPERATE, HOW THEY CAN MANAGE, HOW THEY CAN MANAGE CHARGE MANAGEMENT, HOW THEY CAN BE ABLE TO HAVE VEHICLE TO GRID, HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO GIVE POWER BACK TO THE GRID. AND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? SO THESE ARE GREAT PROGRAMS, BUT THIS DOESN'T STOP HERE. SO AS YOU CAN SEE, WE HAVE GRANT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ANOTHER $121 MILLION. THIS IS WORK THAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS, WORKING WITH, UH, WITH THE EPA, THE ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTION AGENCY, WORKING WITH THE ZEPI, THE ZERO EMISSION SCHOOL BASIN, UH, INCENTIVE TO BE ABLE TO SECURE, UM, ALL THOSE FUNDS. ALSO WITH THE CARL MOYER PART TWO, AND WE ARE CLOSELY FOLLOWING UP, BUT WE'RE COMING TO YOU TO ACCEPT, UM, THE FUNDING FOR THE EPA CLEAN HEAVY DUTY AT $20.4 MILLION. AND ALSO, WE'RE IN THE FINAL STAGES FOR [00:25:01] ZES B ONE AND TWO. SO WE CAN GET THOSE APPROVED AS WELL. AND, AND THEN BE ABLE TO REALIZE ALL THE MONEY, INCLUDING THE CARL MOYER, SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO COME AND CONTINUE OUR WORK TO ELECTRIFY THE REMAINING OF OUR BUS FLEETS. WE'LL BE ABLE TO ELECTRIFY ANOTHER 242, UH, UM, BUSES. UM, AND AT THE SAME TIME, UH, PROVIDE INFRA INFRASTRUCTURE FOR 240 TO CHARGING, UH, STATIONS. THIS IS BIG FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT BECAUSE BY THE TIME WHEN WE COMPLETE ALL THIS, WE'LL BE ABLE TO HAVE CLOSE TO, I WOULD SAY 45% OF OUR FLEET ELECTRIFIED. WE, WE WILL BE ONE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, THE ONE LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE NATION THAT WILL BE HAVING, UM, AS AT LEAST 40 50 TO CLOSE TO 50% OF OUR TRANSPORTATION ELECTRIFIED. AND WHAT THAT MEANS, IT MEANS HEALTHIER ENVIRONMENTS. IT MEANS THAT OUR STUDENTS, SPECIFICALLY IN DISADVANTAGED AREAS THAT TAKE THOSE BUSES, THEY'LL BE ABLE TO RIDE ON CLEAN BUSES, YOU KNOW, BETTER AIR QUALITY. SO LOWERING OUR EMISSIONS, BEING ABLE TO REALLY, UH, REMOVE ALL THESE, UH, EMISSIONS FROM OUR BUSES. THAT, THAT'S HUGE. I CAN SAY THAT, UM, IF YOU WERE TO LOOK AT THE IMPACT OF JUST THIS ONE LOCATION HERE, 480 PASSES AND THE CHARGING STATIONS, IT'S LIKE REMOVING 1300 VEHICLES FROM THE, FROM THE, FROM THE CITY STREETS. THAT'S A LOT OF EMISSIONS. SO WE'RE CALCULATING, WE'RE LOOKING AT THIS. WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CONTINUE THIS PROGRAM IS VERY BENEFICIAL. AND ALSO BE ABLE TO REALIZE ALL THESE GRANTS SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO DO BETTER FOR OUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS, FOR OUR STUDENTS, FOR OUR COMMUNITIES. AND LET'S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS RIGHT NOW. THAT'S SOMETHING THAT THIS BOARD OF EDUCATION PASSED A RESOLUTION IN 2003 THAT ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS BECOME HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS. AND WE, AND WE DID THAT. WE WERE ENGAGED FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS FOR THE LAST TWO DAYS. ACTUALLY, ONE OF THE FIRST PROJECTS THAT I DID MYSELF, WHEN I FIRST JOINED LA UNIFIED IN 2002, I WAS ABLE TO FINISH ONE OF THE FIRST SCHOOLS THAT WE COMPLETED APPLYING HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS, APPLYING THE, THE CHIPS PROGRAM. AND THAT WE LEARNED SO MUCH BY APPLYING THAT PROGRAM IN TERMS OF THEIR QUALITY FINISHES. UM, LOOKING AT, UH, JUST PRETTY MUCH THE ENTIRE BUILDING STRUCTURE ITSELF, HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO SAVE MORE ENERGY, UH, HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO SAVE WATER, HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO SET OUR BUILDINGS BETTER. SO WE LEARNED SO MUCH. THAT PROGRAM CONTINUED. AND TODAY WE HAVE 147 HIGH PERFORMER, HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS. IT'S AMAZING. YOU KNOW, WE ARE THE LARGEST HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE NATION BY FAR. SO, UM, WE CAN LOOK AT SOME OF THE PROJECTS THAT WE FINISHED THIS YEAR. WE FINISH FIVE AND, UH, WE CONTINUE, UH, BY, UH, BY ALSO WHILE WE FINISH THIS PROJECT TO SEE SOME, SOME OF THE AVOIDED ENERGY COSTS, BECAUSE THIS PROJECTS ARE MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT THAN ANYTHING ELSE. 200, 2000 AVOIDED ENERGY COSTS IN FISCAL YEAR 24 25. AND THEN SOME OF THE INCENTIVES THAT WE GET FROM PROGRAMS LIKE THE ZERO BY DESIGN PROGRAM, THAT'S A GREAT PROGRAM. AND WE'RE ABLE TO GET MONEY BACK THAT WE CAN BE ABLE TO INVEST IN MORE EFFICIENCY IN OUR SCHOOLS. SO WE HAVE 49 ACTIVE, UH, CHIPS PROJECTS. AND, UH, WE'LL CONTINUE THE PROGRAM. THE ONLY THING THAT HAPPENED THE LAST, UH, THE LAST SIX MONTHS THAT WERE NOTIFIED THAT THE CHIPS PROGRAM NOW IS TRANSITIONED TO LEAD TO THE LEADERSHIP AND ENERGY ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN. SO WHAT WE'RE DOING, WE'RE DOING A STUDY ANALYSIS INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY WITH OUR FACILITIES TEAM TO SEE THE BENEFITS AND BETTER UNDERSTAND THIS TRANSITION FROM CHIPS TO LEAD SO WE CAN CONTINUE DEVELOPING HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS, BUT ALSO, UM, LOOKING AT, UH, ANY ISSUES THAT, UH, PERHAPS WE SHOULD BE AWARE OF AND TRY TO MITIGATE 'EM BEFORE WE START APPLYING, UH, SOME OF THESE NEW CRITERIA THAT, UH, WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO. CLIMATE LITERACY BECAME BIG, UM, BIGGER THAN, UH, REALLY ANYTHING FOR US, BECAUSE WE'RE SEEING THE, THE IMPORTANCE BECAUSE WE REALIZE THAT A LOT OF THE WORK THAT WE DO, UM, IT'S ONLY BENEFICIAL OR ACTUALLY MORE BENEFICIAL IF WE ENGAGE OUR STUDENTS. AND I WILL SAY THAT, UH, THROUGH THAT PROGRAM, WE'RE ABLE TO ENGAGE, UH, A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS THROUGH THE PROCESS. YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE OVER, OVER 900 STUDENTS PARTICIPATING JUST IN ONE CONTEST. THE HEROES FOR ZERO CONTEST THAT WE HAVE. BUT WE HAVE SO MANY PROGRAMS THAT WE'RE DEVELOPING AND WE'RE USING, USING OUR CLIMATE CHAMPIONS TO REALLY HELP SUPPORT THE PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE. WE HAVE 319 CLIMATE CHAMPIONS RIGHT NOW, WORKING THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND THEY'RE EMBRACING THIS PROJECTS THAT WE HAVE. THEY'RE EMBRACING CLIMATE LITERACY. SO, UM, WE HAVE A LOT OF PROGRAMS IN DEVELOPMENT. YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE PROGRAMS THAT I HAVE UP THERE, LIKE SUSTAINABILITY FOR CLIMATE LITERACY, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, UH, THE [00:30:01] ENERGY EDUCATION, EDIBLE AND NATIVE PLANS, STUDENT SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT GRANTS, THE LEGACY EDUCATOR AND STAFF TRAININGS. SO ALL THOSE ARE PROGRAMS THAT WE'RE TRYING TO, UH, GET OUR FRIENDS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER EMPOWER TO SUPPORT THROUGH THE MOU THAT WE HAVE, SO CAN KEEP ADVANCING CLIMATE LITERACY IN OUR SCHOOL. SO THIS IS A WIN-WIN, UH, SCENARIO FOR ALL OF US. SO, AND WE'RE EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO ENGAGE OUR STUDENTS. AND ALSO WE DO THIS THROUGH ALSO WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE, THE PROJECTS THAT WE HAVE, THE PROJECT THAT WE HAD, UH, GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONIES, A GOOD EXAMPLE OF ENGAGING STUDENTS AND SEEING THE STUDENTS BEING THERE REALLY ENGAGED AND LEARNING ABOUT THE DIFFERENT NEW TECHNOLOGIES THAT WE HAVE ON OUR SCHOOLS. WE'RE DOING THE SAME THING ON OUR SOLAR PROJECTS THAT WE HAVE. SO ALL THOSE PROJECTS THAT WE'RE DEVELOPING NOW, THEY DO HAVE A WORK-BASED LEARNING. THEY HAVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND WE START THIS FROM THE DESIGN PHASE. WE'RE NOT WAITING UNTIL WE FINISH THE PROJECT. WE'RE ENGAGING OUR STUDENTS DURING DESIGN, AND THEN WE CONTINUE IT, UH, DURING, UH, CONSTRUCTION. AND THEN WE'VE, UH, LIVING BEHIND WITH LESSONS LEARNED SO THEY CAN BE ABLE TO APPLY 'EM ON THEIR CURRICULAR AS THEY, AS THEY MOVE FORWARD. SO IT'S, IT'S, IT'S A GREAT PROGRAM AND WE'RE ALSO WORKING WITH CT TO BE ABLE TO, UH, ENGAGE 'EM AS WELL SO THEY CAN BE ABLE TO REALLY, UM, LAUNCH, UH, OR AT LEAST REALIZE FUTURE JOBS, UM, IN THESE, UH, NEW TECHNOLOGIES THAT WE'RE, UH, SHOWCASING TO THEM. AND THEN, SO WE CONTINUE THIS, UH, PARTNERSHIP WITH L-L-D-W-P AND CONTINUE TO ADVANCING THE WORK THAT WE DO. THIS, I WANTED TO SHOWCASE THIS CLIMATE LEADERSHIP IN ACTION BECAUSE I THINK WE NEED TO DO A BETTER JOB, UH, SPECIFICALLY MYSELF IN TERMS OF, UM, VISITING OUR SCHOOL SITES AND LEARNING MORE WHAT THEY'RE DOING, BECAUSE THEY'RE DOING AN INCREDIBLE JOB. I HAPPEN TO BE AT THE CENTER FOR GREEN SCHOOLS PRESENTING, AND, UH, UH, MISS MALLORY BRIGHTON APPROACHED ME, AND WHEN SHE SAW THE WORK AND WHAT I WAS PRESENTING ON, SHE CAME TO SHARE WITH ME ALL THE GREAT WORK THAT SHE'S DOING AT, UH, AT HER SCHOOL, AT SHERMAN OAKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. AND WHEN I HEARD OF THE WORK THAT SHE DID, I, I DID MADE A PROMISE THAT WE'RE GONNA SHOW KIDS, WE'RE GONNA HIGHLIGHT THE WORK. WE'RE GONNA KEEP DOING THIS TO ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS BECAUSE IT'S INCREDIBLE TO SEE HOW, UM, TEACHERS, OR IN THIS CASE, CLIMATE, CLIMATE CHAMPIONS THAT DESIGN TO THE PROGRAM, HOW THEY DEVELOP THEIR OWN PROGRAMS. THEY ENGAGE STUDENTS FOR BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, AND THEY'RE ABLE TO PLANT TREES, TO MAINTAIN GARDENS AND, AND REALLY TEACH, UM, UH, TEACH OUR STUDENTS ABOUT SUSTAINABLE EDUCATION. AND, UH, SHE, UH, DEFINITELY SHE RECEIVED THE RECOGNITION. SHE WAS, SHE WAS AWARDED THE GOLD, THE GOLD LEVEL OF, UH, CALIFORNIA GREEN REBORN, WHICH IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST LEVELS THAT A SCHOOL CAN REACH IN CALIFORNIA. AND, AND IT WAS NICE TO SEE THE WORK THAT SHE'S DOING. SO I WANTED TO, UH, APPLAUD HER FOR THE WORK THAT SHE'S DOING. AND I, I WANTED TO SHOWCASE THIS. WE'RE SHOWCASING THIS ON OUR WEBSITE, AND WE'RE GONNA BE SHOWCASING MORE OF THE GREAT WORK THAT OUR TEACHERS, UM, OUR, I WOULD SAY AMBASSADORS ARE DRAWN THE FIELD, OUR, UH, OUR CLIMATE CHAMPIONS ARE DOING TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCY ON OUR SCHOOLS. SO ABOUT A FEW MONTHS AGO, AND WE HAVE BEEN DISCUSSIONS WITH LACEY, THE LOS ANGELES CLEANTECH INCUBATOR, WERE ABLE TO, UH, TOUR, UH, OUR, UH, SITES THAT REALLY, THAT THEY WERE REALLY IMPACTED BY FIRE, BY OUR FIRES. AND THE REASON WHY WE DID THAT, LACEY APPROACHED ME AND, AND ASKED ME IF, IF WE COULD BE ABLE TO, UM, VISIT ALL OF OUR THREE SITES THAT THEY WERE IMPACTED BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO HELP US BY PROMOTING THEIR NEW TECHNOLOGIES. SO LACEY IS THE INCUBATOR THAT THEY'RE LOOKING AT NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN TERMS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY, WATER CONSERVATION, RESILIENCY. SO WHAT I DID IN CO IN COORDINATION WITH OUR FACILITIES TEAM, I SET UP A TOUR AND I INVITED, UH, WE TOOK A BOSS FROM LACEY AND REALLY TOUR OUR THREE SITES. AND, UM, WE'VE LEARNED SO MUCH, UH, FROM THEM. AND THEY'RE ACTUALLY WORKING ON THE, THERE WERE, THERE WERE TASK, AND THEY WERE GETTING A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR THESE TO BE ABLE TO DEVELOP SOLUTIONS FOR OUR SCHOOLS TO HELP OUR SCHOOLS ADVANCE IN TERMS OF RESILIENCY, IN TERMS OF SUSTAINABILITY. SO TO ME, IT WAS, UH, GREAT TO BE ABLE TO SHOWCASE AND CHEER AND ENGAGE, UH, AND PROMOTE PARTNERSHIPS OF HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY AGAIN, TO HELP US ADVANCE SOME OF THE, UH, COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS AND ADVANCE OUR SCHOOLS TO BECOME MORE RESILIENT. SO IN THE FUTURE, AT LEAST, WE HAVE SOLUTIONS MADE READY. AND SOME OF THE SOLUTIONS WE'RE APPLYING TODAY, SOME OF THEM, IT'S GONNA TAKE A LITTLE LONGER. UH, BUT WHILST WE'RE BRINGING THESE COMPANIES IN WITH OUR SOLUTIONS, WE BE ENGAGING OUR FACILITIES TEAM SO WE CAN MAKE THIS PART OF OUR STANDARDS. UH, SO ALSO WORKING WITH A LOT OF OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, I MENTIONED LACEY, THE SAME WITH THE US GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL, WITH KAPHA, THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS, THEOR PAIN FOUNDATION, AND A A, SOME OF THE OTHER COMPANIES OR ARCHITECTURE ENGINEERING FIRMS THAT CAME AND APPROACHED US BY THEMSELVES AND SAID, WE WANT TO HELP YOU. WE WANT TO BE [00:35:01] ABLE TO HELP THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO ADVANCE IN THE WORKS THAT THEY'RE DOING. SO WE WE'RE, WE'RE LISTENING. WE'RE COLLECTING INFORMATION, AND WE, UH, WE'RE HELPING TO ADVANCE THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING. SO THIS IS ABOUT, UM, OUR WORK IN TERMS OF SHARING KNOWLEDGE AND, UH, HOW WE DO THIS AND HOW WE'RE LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE INDUSTRY AND HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO SHARE SOLUTIONS, BUT ALSO LEARN FROM OTHERS AS WELL. SO, UH, THE WORLD RESOURCES INSTITUTE PRESENTATION THAT I WAS, I WAS APPROACHED BY WRI TO DO A PRESENTATION EARLY IN JANUARY, AND NOW I'M SERVING ON THE ADVISORY COUNCIL. THIS IS, UH, UM, A NATIONWIDE INSTITUTE THAT HELPS TRANSPORTATION ELECTRIFICATION. SO WE SHARE WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST FOUR OR FIVE YEARS. AND REALLY THEY WANTED TO, THEY WANT US TO BE A PART OF THE WORK THAT THEY WERE DOING AND ADVANCE TRANSPORTATION. TRANSPORTATION. SO I JOINED THEIR TEAM, WE'LL CONTINUE TO DO THIS WORK, AND I'VE SHARED HOW WE'VE, UH, OUR PLAN AND OUR STRATEGIC STRATEGIC PLAN OF HOW WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO CONTINUE ELECTRIFYING OUR FLEET. AND THEY WERE EXCITED ABOUT IT. UM, THEY WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT IT. WE'RE LEARNING FROM THEM. THEY'RE ENGAGING, UM, THEY'RE ENGAGING ACTUALLY IN, IN DEVELOPING EVEN SOLUTIONS AT THE, AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL TO MAKE MORE GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR US TO CONTINUE OUR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES THAT WE'RE PLANNING FOR. UM, AND THEN, UH, WE HAVE THE, UM, UH, WE HAVE THEIR SUSTAINABILITY PLAN IN TERMS OF THE US DEVELOPING THAT COMPREHENSIVE PLAN. WE HAD A MEETING WITH, UH, WITH THE CABINET, AND WE SHARED OUR PLAN. AND NOW MEETING WITH ALL THE DIFFERENT DIVISIONS, SHARING THE SECTORS BY DIVISION, AND HOW IT CAN BE ABLE TO ENGAGE OUR INTERNAL TEAMS. AND THEN WE'RE GONNA OUTREACH OUR EXTERNAL TEAMS, OUR STUDENTS, UM, OUR STAFF TO HELP US OUT, DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE SUSTAINABILITY PLAN. AND THEN THE CENTER FOR GREEN SCHOOLS CONFERENCE THAT I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND WITH SYLVIA WALLACE FROM, UH, MY TEAM, AND WE'RE ABLE TO DO THREE DIFFERENT PRESENTATIONS, UM, SYLVIA PRESENTED ON CLIMATE RESILIENCY AND SHARE, UM, THE THINGS THAT, THE INFORMATION THAT I WAS SHARING EARLIER AND HOW WE'RE COLLABORATING TO UNDERSTAND BETTER, UH, CLIMATE IMPACTS AND HOW WE CAN HELP OUR SCHOOLS. UM, I WAS ABLE TO ACTUALLY WORK WITH, UH, UH, LALT, UH, ON, UH, PRESENTING WHEN TRANSFORMING SCHOOL YEARS FOR STUDENT, HOW THEY'RE LEARNING AND CLIMATE RESILIENCY. AND THEN, UH, PRESENTED ON CHIEFS, UH, HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS AND PRESENTED ON HOW WE'RE MEASURING THE IMPACT OF HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS POST BOTH, NOT JUST THE ENVIRONMENTAL, BUT ALSO THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF OUR STUDENTS. 'CAUSE IT DOES IMPROVE STUDENT ATTENDANCE. IT DOES HELP, UH, THE STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO COME BACK, UH, TO SCHOOL ONCE WE DEVELOP HEALTHIER, BETTER ENVIRONMENTS FOR THEM. AND THEN THE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SCHOOL YEAR FOREST, UM, THAT'S, WE HAD A, A MEETING, UM, OUT IN THE FIELD, AND YOU'RE GONNA BE HEARING MORE ABOUT THAT. SO I, I LEARNED THE TEAM SHARE MORE ABOUT THESE EXCITING PROJECTS ABOUT HOW WE'RE DEVELOPING MORE SCHOOL YEAR FORESTS. IN CLOSING, UM, THESE ARE SOME OF THE NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT I WANTED TO SHOWCASE AND SHARE WITH YOU. UH, WE'RE PROCEEDING WITH MOU, WE'RE SEEING THIS GREAT IMPACT IN TERMS OF ALL THE DIFFERENT AREAS, ENERGY, WATER, WASTE, UH, GRID, NEW TECHNOLOGIES, THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY, AND, UH, UTILITIES. WE CAN SEE THE IMPACTS IN TERMS OF OURS LOWERING, LOWERING OUR UTILITIES. AND WE MEASURE THESE BASED ON THE PROJECTS THAT WE HAVE AND HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO CONTINUE A GREATER IMPACT ON OUR, UH, UTILITIES. BUT ALSO, IT'S NOT JUST THE UTILITIES. ANYTIME WE REPLACE A LIGHT FIXTURE, WE'RE PUTTING A NEW LIGHT FIXTURE IN OUR SCHOOLS. THAT MEANS THAT WE DON'T HAVE TO REPLACE IT FOR ANOTHER 15 YEARS, 10, 15 YEARS. SO IT'S A MAINTENANCE SAVINGS AT THE SAME TIMES IT'S ENERGY SAVINGS AND IT'S BETTER QUALITY IN TERMS OF THE, THE, OUR STUDENTS. THEY'LL BE ABLE TO HAVE BETTER LIGHTING ON OUR SCHOOLS. UM, THAT'S A GOOD EXAMPLE. AND THEN TRANSPORTATION, ELECTRIFICATION WE'RE, WE'LL BE CONTINUING WITH, UH, COMING UP WITH MORE ZERO EMISSION BUSES AND CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE UNTIL WE MEET OUR 2040 GOAL, WE'RE LOOKING TO GREENING PROJECTS, YOU KNOW, WE'LL CONTINUE TO LEARN AND HEARING SOME OF THE CHALLENGES. WE HAVE SOME CHALLENGES HERE. WE'RE GONNA WORK THEM OUT. WE'RE GONNA COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS TO HELP SUPPORT THE GREENING ON OUR SCHOOLS, THE INVESTMENT TAX CREDIT. ANOTHER GREAT ONE THAT WILL BE ABLE TO REALIZE MONEY TO REINVEST ON OUR SCHOOLS, UM, IN TERMS OF CREATING MORE RESILIENCY ON OUR SCHOOLS. AND, UH, I WOULD SAY MORE SOLAR PROJECTS, RECYCLED WATER, ANOTHER ONE THAT IS GREAT FOR US. IT WILL CONTINUE TO ADD MORE RECYCLED WATER IN OUR SCHOOLS, CLIMATE LITERACY. UM, MORE PROGRAMS TO COME IN COLLABORATION WITH THE DIVISION OF INSTRUCTION, NEW TECHNOLOGIES. UM, THIS IS WHERE WE GET INTO THE ENERGY AND WATER COMMAND CONTROL CENTER. UM, AND THAT'S HOW WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO MANAGE OUR PEAK LOADS AND, AND HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO SAVE MORE MONEY. AND THEN WE HAVE A LOT OF, UM, PARTNERSHIPS WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS, AND I WANTED TO, UM, SHARE SOME OF THEM, LIKE THE SOLAR REFLECTIVE COATING STUDY. WE'RE DOING A, A STUDY WITH THE LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LAB THAT'S GONNA BE FINISHING UP IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. I'LL BE SHARING THE FINDINGS TO YOU. UM, AND THEN WE HAVE THE, UH, ANOTHER ONE WITH WORKING WITH UCLA. UH, WE'RE WORKING WITH, [00:40:01] UH, UH, UC DAVIES AND WITH THE US DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE. WE'RE LOOKING AT, UH, UH, WE'RE LOOKING AT THEIR, HOW WE CAN DEVELOP, UH, WE'RE LOOKING AT THE SCHOOL OF FOREST, BUT ALSO AT TREE RESEARCH. WE'RE LEARNING ABOUT THE DIFFERENT SPECIES THAT CAN MAKE IT BASED ON EXTREME HEAT WEATHER THAT WE HAVE. AND WE NEED TO BE UPGRADING OUR INVENTORY IN TERMS OF THE TREES THAT WE HAVE. SO IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THEM, UH, FOR A WHILE. RIGHT NOW. THEN WE ARE LOOKING AT HEAT READY SCHOOLS, UM, LOOKING AT ATED SCHOOLS WITH THE ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY AND WITH UCLA AND THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, BECAUSE WE KNOW IT'S GONNA BE GETTING HOTTER. SO WE'RE TRYING TO KIND OF ANTICIPATE AND COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS. AND THAT'S WHAT THIS TEAM IS GONNA BE WORKING WITH US TO, UH, WHAT IDENTIFY FIVE SITES THAT WE'RE GONNA, THEY'RE GONNA BE DOING RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS OF HOW WE CAN BE ABLE TO AT LEAST COME UP WITH BETTER SCENARIOS, UH, IN TERMS OF HOT WEATHER AS WE MOVE FORWARD. AND THEN THE, THE, THE NEXT ONE THAT I HAVE IS THE PAP TUNE. UM, THAT'S THE, THAT'S A GRANT THAT, THAT WAS, THAT WAS, UH, ABLE TO REALIZE THE NATIONAL GRANT. AND IT'S, UH, THROUGH THE ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS AGENCY. AND, AND THIS GRANT HERE IS TO HELP US, UH, COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS FOR HEALTHIER AIR. SO THERE THAT WE BREATHE, NOBODY'S MONITORING THERE THAT WE BREATHE. THE IDEA IS TO, UM, UM, WE'RE IDENTIFYING A HANDFUL OF SITES THAT THEY'LL BE VISITING AND DOING THE RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS, AND THEY WILL BE TELLING US WHAT SOLUTIONS WE'LL BE HAVING IN THE FUTURE TO HAVE HEALTHIER AIR IN OUR SCHOOLS. SO, AND THEN THE LA COUNTY, THE EXTREME HEAT MITIGATION, IT'S A NEW GRANT THAT WE'RE APPLYING FOR. WE'RE EXCITED FOR THAT GRANT. WE'RE WORKING WITH THE LA COUNTY TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT. UM, AND THEN, UH, AND THEN LOOKING AT HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS, THE COST AWARENESS THAT WE HAVE THERE AND THE E SUSTAINABILITY PLAN, WHICH IS UNDERWAY, WHICH, AGAIN, EXCITED ABOUT THE E SUSTAINABILITY COMPREHENSIVE PLAN BECAUSE IT'S GONNA SET UP NEW GOALS AND OBJECTIVES THAT WE HAVE TO START PLANNING MOVING FORWARD. AND ACTUALLY, THE GOOD THING IS THAT SOME OF THESE SAVINGS I MAY SHARE YEARLY, BUT THEY ACCUMULATE EVERY YEAR. WE'RE GONNA KEEP REALIZING THOSE AND MORE, WHICH IS GREAT FOR OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT. YEAH, YEAH. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO, AS YOU AS, UM, THE SAVINGS ARE INCREASING, MAYBE JUST TO HAVE LIKE A DASHBOARD, NOT TO CREATE MORE WORK FOR YOU, BUT JUST TO SEE, YOU KNOW, UM, CHRONOLOGICALLY OR AT LEAST THROUGH, THROUGH THE YEARS OR MONTHS, HOW THOSE SAVINGS ARE OCCURRING SO WE CAN SEE IT AND, YOU KNOW, UM, VISUALLY SEE ALL OF THOSE SAVINGS, I THINK. UM, SO I WAS CURIOUS IF THERE ARE CHANGES THAT YOU THINK ARE NEEDED TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THE DISTRICT TO BE ABLE TO RESPOND TO EXTREME HEAT WITH THE KIND OF, AND THE SOLUTIONS THAT YOU HAVE IDENTIFIED THAT HELP MITIGATE EXTREME HEAT THAT WOULD, UM, MAKE IT EASIER TO DO THAT, UM, FOR IT TO BE RECOGNIZED AT THE SAME KIND OF EMERGENCY THAT MAYBE SOME OTHER, UM, CONCERNS HAVE BEEN, YOU KNOW, THE WAY THAT SEISMIC RISK IS REALLY RECOGNIZED AS A SIGNIFICANT, UH, RISK. THANKS, LAUREN. YEAH. IN TERMS OF THE EXTREME HEAT RESOLUTION IN THE PASS, THE, THE BOARD RESOLUTION DID NAME ECOS SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE TO KIND OF SHARE THE FINDINGS. AND THANK YOU FOR THAT. AND WE MADE SURE THAT WE WERE PART OF THE PROCESS. SO WE CONTACTED, UH, THE TEAMS THAT ARE WORKING WITH, AND WE SAID, WE NEED TO BE ON THE TABLE. WE NEED TO BE DISCUSSING SHARING SOLUTIONS, UH, GIVING OUR RECOMMENDATIONS SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO MAKE IT THROUGH THAT. IN TERMS OF, UH, UH, THE SOLUTIONS THAT YOU MENTIONED, YES. SO ANYTHING, ANYTIME WE IDENTIFY, UH, A SOLUTION OR A NEW TECHNOLOGY, WE GO THROUGH A PROCESS TO MAKE SURE THAT IT, UH, IT IS VIABLE. AND THEN WE DO SHARE WITH OUR DESIGN STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES AS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE CHANGING OR BEING ADOPTED TO. SO, UM, ALL THOSE ARE, ARE IN WORKS AND WE'RE LEARNING A LOT SPECIFICALLY FOR THE, FROM THE MOST RECENT FIRES. AND FOR US, IT'S ALWAYS TO ANTICIPATE WHAT'S NEXT. 'CAUSE THE EXTREME HEAT IS NOT GOING AWAY. YOU KNOW, WE HAVE, WE HAD THE HOTTEST MONTH FOR AGES RIGHT NOW, MARCH HOTTER THAN, UH, APRIL, MAY, AND JUNE. AND, UH, I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW JULY'S GONNA BE. SO I, UH, IN AUGUST AND WHEN KIDS COME BACK TO SCHOOL. SO WE WANT BE ABLE TO BE PREPARED, WANT TO BE ABLE TO DEVELOP MORE SOLUTIONS IN TERMS OF OUR GREENING PROGRAMS, SHADE, PLANT MORE TREES. AND THAT'S WHY FOR ME IT IS, UM, FOR OUR, FOR OUR, UH, I'LL SAY FOR OUR TEAM IS TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS THAT CAN HAPPEN QUICKLY. NOTHING. THINGS THAT WILL TAKE FOUR, FIVE YEARS. HOW CAN I COME UP WITH A SOLUTION THAT CAN BE ABLE TO DO JUST LIKE THIS GREEN SCHOOL YEAR, FOURS YOU'RE GONNA HEAR ABOUT THAT CAN BE ABLE TO TURN A PROJECT WITHIN A YEAR OR TWO YEARS. SO WE WE'RE THINKING ALWAYS TRYING TO FIND OUT THE BEST SOLUTIONS THAT, UH, WE CAN HELP BUILD ON. SO THANKS. THANK YOU. CAN YOU ELABORATE A LITTLE BIT MORE ON HOW THAT WOULD WORK? [01:00:01] YES. SO, UM, SO WE'RE ENGAGING OUR STUDENTS IN A LOT OF THE, UH, A LOT OF THE PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE, LIKE THE HEROES FOR ZERO. IT'S A GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW WE CAN TAKE, UH, MONEY FROM THE MOU, THE W-P-M-O-M-O-U, WHICH THEY LOVE THE HEROES FOR ZERO BY, BY THE WAY, BECAUSE IT DOES SAVE ENERGY. AND WE TEACH CLIMATE LITERACY ON OUR SCHOOLS. UM, SO WE ADOPTED SOME OF THOSE PROGRAMS, JUST THAT ONE ITSELF THAT WE, UH, WE CAME UP WITH SOLUTIONS LIKE USING THE BUILDING AS A TOOL TO LEARN ABOUT ENGINEERING, UH, LEARN ABOUT ARCHITECTURAL, UH, LEARN ABOUT ENERGY EFFICIENCY, WATER CONSERVATION. SO WE'RE ASKING 'EM TO FOLLOW A CERTAIN PATHWAYS TO BE ABLE TO SHOWCASE WHAT THEY'RE LEARNING OUT OF IT SO THAT THAT ENGAGEMENT IS HAPPENING ON SOME OF THE CONTESTS THAT WE HAVE. AT THE SAME TIME, THROUGH THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, WE'RE IDENTIFYING PROJECTS THAT WE CAN PROVIDE STIPENDS TO OUR STUDENTS OKAY. TO OUR SCHOOLS. AND THE IDEA IS, UH, IT COULD BE SMALL STIPENDS, IT COULD BE SEVEN $50. THAT'S WHAT WE'RE DISCUSSING ON SOME OF THEM THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER POWER IS ENTERTAINING DISCUSSING WITH US, AND THEY WANT BE ABLE TO HELP TO IDENTIFY THE NEXT SUSTAINABILITY CHAMPIONS TO KIND OF SHOWCASE THAT, UM, WE CAN BE A PART OF THE, OF THE SOLUTION IF WE HELP US ACHIEVE THIS. AND, AND, AND THROUGH THAT PROCESS, THEY CAN LEARN, GET ENGAGED IN TERMS OF CLIMATE LITERACY, AND ALSO EVEN GIVE THEM SOME CERTIFICATIONS SO CAN BE ABLE TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREER DEPENDING ON WHAT GRADE THEY ARE. SO THERE'S A LOT OF SOLUTIONS THAT WE'RE DOING THERE. UM, A LOT OF THINKING HOW WE CAN REALLY ENGAGE MORE STUDENTS IN THE PROCESS. AND WE'RE SEEING THAT WE'RE, WE'RE ABLE TO OUTREACH MORE, UH, THROUGH THE CLIMATE CLIMATE CHAMPIONS PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE AS WELL. THAT'S, THAT'S GREAT TO HEAR. UM, AS YOU WERE MENTIONING THAT, I SAW THAT THE L-A-D-W-P, THE PARTNERSHIP SUPPORTING THE STUDENT PATHWAYS, UM, IS IT POSSIBLE, AND MAY NOT BE YOU TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION BECAUSE I KNOW WE'RE TRYING TO BUILD OUT OUR PATHWAYS THROUGH CTE AND BUILD MORE, WHAT WOULD BE JUST THE BASIS FOR A SCHOOL THAT WANTED, THAT DID NOT HAVE A PATHWAY, BUT WANTED TO START AND HAVE A PATHWAY IN THIS AREA? YEAH, PLEASE CONTACT US, HAVE A CONTACT, THE E SUSTAINABILITY OF OFFICE, AND ALSO, UM, MAYBE WE, WE, WE HAD AN EARLIER MEETING DISCUSSION WITH PIA THAT SHE'S MANAGING PRETTY MUCH, UH, THE ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE AND THE, THE CTE PROGRAMS THAT WE'RE DISCUSSING AT THE LAST MEETING, IF YOU RECALL, WE'RE DISCUSSING OUR COLLABORATION OF IDENTIFYING THESE PROGRAMS, UM, BEING ABLE TO HELP STRUCTURE PROGRAMS THAT REALLY, UM, EVEN OUR ADULT EDUCATION AND, AND YOUNGER STUDENTS CAN BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE AND REALLY HELP BENEFIT THEM IN THE LONG RUN AND BENEFIT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN TERMS OF THE COST AVOIDANCE AND SAVINGS THAT WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO REALIZE. YEAH. WHICH WILL BE HELPFUL BECAUSE I KNOW ONE OF THE CONVERSATIONS I HAD PRIOR WAS ABOUT OUR STUDENTS HAVING PRE-APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES THAT WERE A LARGE LIABILITY TO THE DISTRICT, AND IT SEEMS LIKE IN THIS AREA, THIS WOULD FIT INTO THAT PENDING IF THE SCHOOL HAD IT. BUT IF THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT, HOW COULD WE OPEN IT UP FOR THE STUDENT TO BE A PART OF A PRE-APPRENTICESHIP GOING INTO APPRENTICESHIP AND THEN INTO WORKFORCE LIKE THIS? I, I'VE DONE THIS BEFORE THAT WE WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL AND WE HAD PROGRAMS AND WE HAD STUDENTS GRADUATE THROUGH THE PROGRAM. WE HAD THE, WHAT WE CALLED THE PROP 49 PROGRAM. IT WAS, UH, MOSTLY ABOUT ENERGY EFFICIENCY, AND WE WORKED WITH THE SCHOOLS WHERE WE IDENTIFY TEACHERS AND THEY HAD THE WHOLE, UH, GROUP OF STUDENTS THAT THEY CAME AND PARTICIPATED THROUGH OUR ENERGY AUDITS, AND WE TAUGHT 'EM HOW TO DO ENERGY AUDITS, AND THEN THEY RECEIVED CERTIFICATIONS. SO SOME OF THOSE PROGRAMS WE WANT TO BRING BACK TO, TO, UM, GET OUR STUDENTS THROUGH A THREE MONTH OR SIX MONTH PROGRAM AND THEN GRADUATE WITH A, WITH A CERTIFICATION THAT THEY CAN CONTINUE, UH, THAT WORK, WORKING WITH SOME OF THE, UH, WORKING WITH OUR INDUSTRY, UH, THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO LAUNCH JOBS IMMEDIATELY RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL. YES, THAT WOULD, THAT WOULD BE AMAZING. AND THEN WITH THE PROJECTS THAT WE HAVE ONGOING RIGHT NOW, HOW ARE WE, UM, ENGAGING THE STUDENTS THAT ARE IN THAT SCHOOL? I KNOW AT THE SITE THAT WE WERE TODAY, UH, THE TEACHER CAME OVER, HE, HE HAD ME ENGAGED. UM, BUT HOW ARE WE CONNECTING AT EVERY GRADE LEVEL THOSE STUDENTS TO BE INVOLVED, WHETHER IT'S JUST A FIELD TRIP TO THE SITE TO SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING BEFORE, YOU KNOW, BEFORE WE SEE THESE BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS THAT YOU SHOWED US RIGHT HERE. HOW ARE WE ENGAGING OUR STUDENTS IN THAT? YEAH, SO, UM, THE WAY THAT WE ARE ENGAGING THEM IS THROUGH THE CLIMATE CHAMPIONS AND THE, AND THE DIVISION OF INSTRUCTION OF THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE. AND IN SOME CASES, WHEN WE DO, WHEN WE HAVE PROJECTS, WE ENGAGE 'EM, SO WE INFORM THE SCHOOL ITSELF, JUST THAT SPECIFIC PROJECT ITSELF. I MEAN, WE HAVE BEEN ENGAGEMENT AND WE HAVE BEEN DOING ENGAGEMENT AND COLLABORATION FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS. I WAS AWARE OF THEIR ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAM. THEY HAVE THEIR ENGINEERING PROGRAM, AND WE'VE BEEN DISCUSSING ABOUT THE UPCOMING PROJECT. WE'RE DOING THAT NOW WITH OUR FACILITIES THE SAME WAY. SO ANY PROJECTS THAT WE'RE PLANNING IN THE FUTURE, THAT THERE IS A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AS PART OF IT. SO THE, THE, UM, THE SCHOOL, UH, GETS ENGAGED [01:05:01] OR THEY BECOME AWARE OF IT. AND THEN THROUGH THE CONTRACTS THAT WE HAVE, LIKE IN THIS CASE, MORELO CONSTRUCTION ON THAT PROJECT TODAY, PART OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITY AS PART OF THE DELIVERABLE WAS TO WORK WITH THE SCHOOL AND TO ENSURE THAT, UH, BRING THOSE STUDENTS AND HELP THEM EDUCATE 'EM IN TERMS OF THE DIFFERENT SYSTEMS THEY'RE INSTALLING. AND WE'RE THERE ALONG THE WAY. OUR TEAMS ARE THERE TO ENSURE I HAVE, UH, DEDICATED ONE OF MY, ONE OF MY STAFF JUST TO DO THAT. THE, THE JOB THAT SHE HAS IS TO ENGAGE THE SCHOOLS THROUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, ENGAGE THE DIVISION OF INSTRUCTION, ENGAGE THE SCHOOL ITSELF, MAKE 'EM AWARE OF THE PROGRAM, AND THEN ENGAGE PARTICIPATION FROM THE SCHOOL, THE TEACHERS SO THEY CAN BE ABLE TO BE A PART OF THE PROGRAM, WHICH IS GREAT. IT'S WORKING VERY WELL. I JUST, I HAD MORE STAFF TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM IN A GREATER SCALE BECAUSE WE, AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE MANY SCHOOLS AND CENTERS, BUT WE'RE DOING IT AT A GRADE SCALE, THE 21 THAT I SHARED, THE ONES THAT FACILITIES IS DOING. WE'RE GETTING MORE ENGAGED WITHIN THE FACILITIES TO MAKE SURE THIS PROGRAM'S HAPPENING AT OUR MODERNIZATION PROJECTS HAPPENING, OUR NEW CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS THROUGHOUT. SO AT LEAST, UH, STUDENTS GET ENGAGED BECAUSE THAT'S THE BEST LEARNING TOOL AND OPPORTUNITY THAT THEY HAVE. YEAH. THANK YOU. THAT'S AMAZING. THANK YOU. GREAT. I HAVE ONE QUESTION. SURE. UM, I, YOU MENTIONED IN THE CAMPUS GREENING PROJECTS, YOU MENTIONED, UM, THREE CHALLENGES, RIGHT? THAT YOU'RE FACING, RIGHT? SO OUT OF THESE THREE, OR MAYBE THERE'S ANOTHER ONE, UH, WHAT IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU'RE FACING IN GREENING SCHOOL CAMPUSES TODAY? APART FROM FUNDING? 'CAUSE I KNOW WE HAVE FUNDING, BUT I KNOW THAT'S ONE. UM, AND WHAT IS PREVENTING, UM, THE, AND ADDRESSING THE BARRIERS THAT PARTNERS HAVE BEEN CONSISTENTLY RAISING OVER TIME? AND I KNOW WE'RE GONNA, WE'RE GONNA HEAR SOME, UH, SHORTLY, BUT, UM, THESE ARE NON NEW ISSUES. SO WHAT'S KEEPING US FROM MO MOVING PAST THESE ISSUES? YEAH, THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO ME, AND IT'S SURFACE, AND WE KIND OF WERE AWARE OF IT, IS ARE THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS OF A SITE. THE CHALLENGE WITH THAT IS THAT WE, WHEN, WHEN A GRANTEE APPLIES FOR A GRANT, THEY CAN, UH, ALLOW A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MONIES TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENTAL SIDE CONDITIONS, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW THEM UNTIL YOU REALLY TEST, FOR EXAMPLE, YOU NEED TO TEST THE ASPHALT FOR ASBESTOS. NOW, WE WE'RE TELLING 'EM, YOU HAVE TO TEST THE MARKINGS FOR LEAD. WE'RE FINDING OUT THIS MARKINGS, 90% OF THOSE MARKINGS, THEY DO HAVE TRACEABLE LEVELS OF LEAD, WHICH MEANS THAT THEY NEED REMEDIATION. UM, AND THEN AT THE SAME TIME, UH, THE, THE ACTUAL SOIL, YOU HAVE TO TEST THE SOIL, WHICH IS UNDERNEATH TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S CLEAN. AND, AND, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU APPLY FOR A GROUND, YOU, YOU'RE NOT APPLYING AND SAYING, I'M GONNA PUT 20% TOWARDS THAT. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IMPACT IS. UNFORTUNATELY, PERHAPS IN THE FUTURE, WE AS A SCHOOL DISTRICT, WE CAN, UM, DO A DUE DILIGENCE AHEAD OF TIME, SO WE KNOW WHAT THAT COSTS, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I FEEL WE SHOULDN'T BE PENALIZING A SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THE SET ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS THAT THEY CANNOT HAVE THE SAME SIZE OF A PROJECT THAT ANOTHER SCHOOL CAN HAVE THAT DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME CONDITIONS. SO TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THAT EQUITY THROUGHOUT AND BE ABLE TO SPREAD THE MONEY, I THINK WE AS A SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL HAVE TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS TO AT LEAST ANTICIPATE TESTS AND MITIGATE THOSE ISSUES. SO WHEN THE PARTNERS ARE DOING THE, THE PROJECTS, AT LEAST THEY CAN GO OUT AND LOOK AT AND DEVELOP THEIR PROJECTS, UM, YOU KNOW, BASED ON THE GRANT THAT THEY APPLIED FOR. SO THOSE ARE THE THINGS I THINK WE NEED TO BE THINKING, UH, FORWARD, UH, JUST LIKE WE'RE DOING SOME OF THE OTHER PROJECTS, I THINK WE SHOULD BE HELPING, UH, WITH OUR RESPECT. AND, UH, THOSE ARE THE THINGS WE'RE GONNA BE DISCUSSING, I THINK, WITH OTHER MANAGEMENT AND SEE HOW WE CAN BEST SUPPORT, UM, THE PARTNERSHIPS TO ADVANCE OUR GREEN ON OUR SCHOOLS. SURE. UM, AND SO THAT THIS, UM, INITIATIVE IS REALLY ABOUT INCREASING, UH, TREE CANOPY ON CAMPUSES TO 30%. UM, SOME OTHER WORK THAT WE DO IN TERMS OF PARTNERING WITH THE DISTRICT IS WE RUN A LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, WHICH L-A-U-S-D HAS BEEN PARTICIPATING IN THROUGH THE ECOS SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE. UM, AND IN THAT LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE, WE REALLY ARE FOCUSED ON WORKING WITH DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS TO WORK THROUGH BARRIERS, CHALLENGES, AND PROVIDE THEM THE DATA TO GET TO THAT 30% TREE CANOPY. SO THE AIM OF TODAY'S PRESENTATION REALLY IS TO, UM, PROVIDE THE DISTRICT AND THIS COMMITTEE WITH INFORMATION. SO AS OPPOSED TO BEING KIND OF REACTIVE, THERE'S ACTUALLY AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE INTROSPECTIVE AND LOOK AT THE INTERNAL PROCESSES THAT ARE KIND OF CREATING BARRIERS. AND I KNOW OFTEN IT'S SAID THAT, YOU KNOW, WITH L-A-U-S-C, IT'S NOT LIKE COMPARING APPLES WITH APPLES, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT OTHER DISTRICTS. BUT I DO THINK WE HAVE SOME INFORMATION THAT ILLUSTRATES THERE ARE SOME COMPARABLE, UM, WAYS WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO THE PROJECT LEVEL. TODAY I'M GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT CAL FIRE'S INVESTMENTS IN L-A-U-S-D GREEN SCHOOLYARD PROJECTS, AND SOME OF THE BARRIERS THAT WE HAVE OBSERVED WHILE IMPLEMENTING THESE PROJECTS. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK L-A-U-S-D FOR ITS ONGOING SCHOOL YARD GREENING EFFORTS. IT'S 2022 SCHOOLYARDS FOR ALL RESOLUTION. IT'S GREEN SCHOOLYARDS FOR ALL PLAN AND LA USD'S COMMITMENT TO FUND SCHOOLYARD GREENING PROJECTS. THESE INVESTMENTS TRANSFORM SCHOOL CAMPUSES INTO GREEN HEALTHY CAMPUSES WHERE CHILDREN CAN LEARN, PLAY, AND THRIVE. CAL FIRE'S GREEN SCHOOLYARD INITIATIVE WAS DEVELOPED TO INCREASE TREE CANOPY COVER AND NATURE-BASED HANDS-ON LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AT CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS WITH THE INTENT TO CREATE MORE NATURE IMMERSIVE SCHOOLS TO PROTECT THE HEALTH, WELLBEING, AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES OF CHILDREN MOST VULNERABLE TO INCREASING TEMPERATURES AND EXTREME HEAT ACROSS CALIFORNIA. TREES PROVIDE CLEAN AIR, CLEAN WATER, CLEAN SOIL. THEY PROVIDE BENEFITS IN TERMS OF MENTAL HEALTH AND PHYSICAL HEALTH. THEY REDUCE STRESS, AND IT'S BEEN PROVEN THAT CHILDREN THAT ARE SURROUNDED BY TREES AND CAN SEE TREES FROM THEIR CLASSROOM PERFORM BETTER ACADEMICALLY. PROJECTS THAT ARE FUNDED BY CAL FIRE ARE FUNDED WITH, UH, STATE FUNDS AND ALSO FEDERAL FUNDS. UH, CAL FIRE HAS INVESTED APPROXIMATELY $55 MILLION ACROSS 51 L-A-U-S-D CAMPUSES SINCE, UH, 2022. CAL FIRE ALSO AWARDED TWO GRANTS TO L-A-U-S-D, UH, FOR CHILDCARE FACILITY PROJECTS. ONE GRANT WAS FOR $3 MILLION TO IMPLEMENT GREEN SCHOOLYARD PROJECTS ON THREE CHILDCARE FACILITY CAMPUSES. AND ANOTHER ONE WAS FOR $2.9 MILLION FOR THREE OTHER TO TREAT THREE OTHER CAMPUSES, CHILDCARE FACILITIES PROJECTS FOR A TOTAL OF SIX CAMPUSES. WE ALSO AWARDED A GRANT IN 2023 TO THREE PEOPLE FOR $14.2 MILLION. UH, THAT GRANT WAS TO REMOVE 425 SQUARE FEET OF CONCRETE AND ASPHALT TO PLANT 928 TREES TO CONSTRUCT 68 OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS. AND THIS GRANT [01:15:02] INCLUDED A TOTAL 17 CAMPUSES. 12 OF THOSE CAMPUSES ARE L-A-U-S-D CAMPUSES TO OUR HACIENDA LA PUENTE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CAMPUSES AND THREE ARE LINWOOD UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CAMPUSES HERE ARE TWO CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR THE CEDAR LANE DUAL LANGUAGE ACADEMY AT HACIENDA LA PUENTE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. THE ONE ON THE LEFT WAS THE ORIGINAL PROPOSAL THAT WAS SUBMITTED TO US TO REMOVE 19,200 SQUARE FEET OF ASPHALT, 4,600 SQUARE FEET OF HIGH WATER USED LAWN, AND TO INSTALL 23,800 SQUARE FEET OF NATIVE GARDEN AND OUTDOOR LEARNING AREAS, AND TO PLANT EIGHT 80 NATIVE AND CLIMATE RESILIENT TREES. THE CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT PLAN ON THE RIGHT IS THE FINAL PLAN THAT'S CURRENTLY IN CONSTRUCTION, AND IT'S GOING TO BE REMOVING 18,500 SQUARE FEET, UH, REMOVING 6,500 SQUARE FEET OF HIGH WATER USE LAWN AREA, AND IT'LL INCLUDE A 25,000 SQUARE FOOT AREA OF NATIVE GARDEN AND OUTDOOR LEARNING. AND IT'S GOING TO BE PLANTING, UH, 82 TREES. SO IT WOULD ACTUALLY INCREASE THE, THE SCOPE OF WORK INCREASE IN SOME AREAS FOR THIS PROJECT. THIS NEXT PROJECT THAT I WOULD LIKE NEXT CAMPUS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT IS THE LINDBERGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AT LINWOOD UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, LINDBERGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. ORIGINALLY, IT PROPOSED TO REMOVE 10,000 SQUARE FEET OF ASPHALT, UH, 10,000 SQUARE FEET OF PLANTING OUTDOOR LEARNING AREA, AND TO PLANT 41 TREES. THE FINAL CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT PLAN THAT'S CURRENTLY IN CONSTRUCTION IS GOING TO BE REMOVING 11,200 SQUARE FEET OF ASPHALT, 6,800 SQUARE FEET OF HIGH WATER USE LAWN. 18,000 SQUARE FEET OF PLANTING OUTDOOR LEARNING AREA WILL BE INCLUDED, AND IT'LL PLANT 46 TREES. THE LAST CAMPUS I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT IS THE MILES AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AT, AT L-A-U-S-D. ORIGINALLY, THE CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT PLAN WAS TO REMOVE 33,900 SQUARE FEET OF ASPHALT. 20,570 SQUARE FEET OF GRASS PLAY FIELD WAS GOING TO BE INCLUDED, A NATIVE PLANTING AREA OF 10,180 SQUARE FEET, 45 TREES, AND AN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM OF 3000 SQUARE FEET. THE REVISED PLANTS CURRENTLY INCLUDE, UH, 16,000 SQUARE FEET OF ASPHALT REMOVAL, UM, A GRASS PLAY FIELD OF 15,530 SQUARE FEET, A NATIVE PLANTING AREA OF 1200 SQUARE FEET, 19 TREES. AND THE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM SPACE HAS BEEN REMOVED. SO THERE'S A, A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE SCOPE OF WORK DUE TO, UH, INCREASED OR, OR PROJECT COSTS. THIS IS THE, UH, BUDGET FOR EACH ONE OF THESE THREE CAMPUSES. FOR CEDAR LANE, IT'S $709,000. FOR LINDBERGH, IT'S 431,000. AND FOR, UH, MILES AVENUE ELEMENTARY, IT'S 1 MILLION 487, 720 $5,000. WE CAL FIRE RECOGNIZES THAT L-A-U-S-D HAS MADE GREAT STRIDES IN ADDRESSING MANY OF THE BARRIERS AND CHALLENGES THAT SCHOOLYARD GREENING PROJECTS HAVE, AND THAT OUR PARTNERS AT GRANTEES HAVE EXPERIENCE. UH, FOR EXAMPLE, WE RECOGNIZE THAT L-A-U-S-D HAS APPOINTED AN E ECO SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER AS THE SINGLE POINT OF CONTACT FOR GREEN SCHOOLYARD, UH, PARTNERS, UH, DESIGNATED $3 MILLION OF FUNDING VIA CREDITS AND REIMBURSEMENTS TO SUPPORT PROJECT RELATED COSTS. UH, ESTABLISHED A TIGER TEAM TO WORK WITH GREENING PARTNERS ON SCHOOL YARD GREENING PROJECTS TO ADDRESS THE BARRIERS. AND ALSO, UH, LUS D'S CURRENTLY UPDATING THE LEAD PAINT AND ASSOCIATED ASPHALT REMOVAL PROTOCOLS TO REDUCE COSTS. WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE HAVE ADDITIONAL FUNDING COMING IN IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS FOR GREEN SCHOOLYARD PROJECTS. UH, ON APRIL 1ST, WE WILL BE OPENING UP THE ELIS O CANYON GREEN SCHOOL YARD GRAND SOLICITATION PERIOD, UH, THROUGH AP THROUGH MAY 29TH. IT'S FOR $13.5 MILLION FOR GREEN SQUARE YARD PROJECTS IN THE, UH, SAN FERNANDO VALLEY AREA FOR THE COMMUNITIES THAT WERE AFFECTED BY THE ALISO CANYON GAS LEAK. AND THIS FALL, WE WILL ALSO HAVE ABOUT $25 MILLION IN PRO POSITION FOR FUNDING FOR, UH, URBAN FORESTRY ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE THAT INCLUDE GREEN SCHOOL YARD PROJECTS. AND IN THE FALL OF 2027, WE'LL HAVE ANOTHER 25 MILLION, UH, FROM PROPOSITION FOUR FOR MORE URBAN FORESTRY ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE, INCLUDING GREEN SCHOOL YARD PROJECTS. [01:20:02] CAL FIRE'S COMMITTED TO CONTINUING TO WORK WITH L-A-U-S-D AND ITS SCHOOLYARD GREENING PARTNERS TO OVERCOME BARRIERS AND ENSURE THAT SCHOOLYARD GREENING PROJECTS CONTINUE TO TAKE PLACE. WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE UPCOMING GRANT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES TO FUND MORE SCHOOLYARD GREENING PROJECTS ACROSS L-A-U-S-D, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH YOU. THANK YOU. UH, WE WORK WITH MANY DISTRICTS, AND THIS IS A VERY GOOD ONE, , UH, AND YOU HAVE MADE UNPRECEDENTED INVESTMENTS IN SCHOOL YEAR GREENING. UM, OUR ORGANIZATION HAS BEEN COLLABORATING WITH THE DISTRICT, IN PARTICULAR WITH THE ECOS SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE FOR A FEW YEARS NOW. AND WE FOCUS ON SYSTEMS CHANGE AND REDUCING BARRIERS TO GREENING. UH, THIS INCLUDES, UM, POLICY RESEARCH, ADVOCACY, PROVIDING TECHNICAL SUPPORT, AND SOMETIMES BUILDING PROJECTS TO TEST APPROACHES LIKE SO, SO THE PILOT PROJECT WE BUILT HERE WAS WITH THAT GOAL. UM, ONE, ONE EXAMPLE, OH, SORRY. I, OKAY. ONE EXAMPLE OF OUR WORK IS OUR SCHOOL YEAR TREE CANOPY STUDY, WHICH MEASURED TREE CANOPY COVER IN AREAS USED BY STUDENTS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY, UH, TO UNDERSTAND THE NEED AND PRIORITIZE INVESTMENT. WE'RE REALLY FOCUSED ON TRYING TO INCREASE TREE CANOPY WHERE STUDENTS ARE HAVING TREES IN PARKING LOTS IS IMPORTANT TOO, BUT, UM, THE CHILDREN ARE THE ONES EXPOSED. UM, AND IN THIS MAP, RED DIAMONDS, UH, MEAN THE SCHOOLS THAT HAVE LESS THAN 5% FREE CANOPY STUDENT ZONES, AND OVER 70%, UH, STUDENTS QUALIFYING FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS. AND THIS LINES UP WITH SOME OF THE ASSESSMENTS THAT THIS, UH, UH, DISTRICT HAS MADE. UM, THIS IS ON OUR WEBSITE, AND YOU CAN CLICK ON EACH SCHOOL AND SEE MORE DATA. UM, WE KNOW YOU PROBABLY HEARD THIS A LOT, BUT I WANTED TO EMPHASIZE, WE KNOW THAT TREES ARE A VERY EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO REDUCE TEMPERATURES, UH, AND PROTECT STUDENTS FROM HEAT. UH, THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE ON AN 81 DEGREE, UM, DAY ASPHALT IN THE SHADE, UH, IS 33 DEGREES COOLER THAN IN THE SUN. UM, WE ALSO KNOW THAT LIVING SCHOOL YARDS ARE SCALABLE, NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS THAT BENEFIT HEALTH, UH, LEARNING AND THE ENVIRONMENT. UH, AND THESE SPACES ARE NOT JUST A NICE TO HAVE, UH, THEY'RE BECOMING A NECESSARY INFRASTRUCTURE, UH, THAT WILL BECOME CRITICAL AS WE EXPECT HOTTER TEMPERATURES. AND THE DISTRICT HAS BUILT SOME GREAT EXAMPLES OF LIVING SCHOOL YARDS. THIS IS A PICTURE OF EAGLE ROCK, AND, UH, THERE'S SO MANY WONDERFUL GREENING PARTNERS YOU WORK WITH THAT, UM, ARE, UH, BUILDING GREAT, UH, PROJECTS AS WELL. HOWEVER, UM, UH, SORRY. MY, UH, UM, AS, UH, HENRY MENTIONED, UH, THERE, UH, THERE ARE STILL BARRIERS THAT NEED TO BE OVERCOME IN ORDER TO DO THIS FOR SO MANY CAMPUSES AND QUICKLY. UM, AND IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY BARRIERS TO GREENING, TEST, TEST SCALABLE APPROACHES TO CREATING SCHOOL YEAR FORESTS AND DEVELOP MODELS TO FOLLOW, WE IMPLEMENTED TWO SCHOOL YEAR FOREST PILOT PROJECTS IN CALIFORNIA, ONE WITH L-A-U-S-D, UH, UM, CHRISTO AND HIS OFFICE HELPED US SELECT THE SITE, AND ANOTHER ONE WITH SACRAMENTO CITY UNIFIED DISTRICT SCHOOL DISTRICT. AND BOTH PROJECTS WERE FUNDED BY CAL FIRE AND, UM, AND HAD SIMILAR CONDITIONS. WE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH BUDGET TO GO THROUGH THE DIVISION OF STATE ARCHITECT TO REMOVE ASPHALT. SO IT WAS, YOU KNOW, SELECTING A SITES THAT WERE UNPAVED. UM, SO ONE OF THE PILOTS, THIS IS, UM, THIS IS THE ONE THAT, UH, WE DID WITH L-A-U-S-D AND CHRIS MENTIONED, IS IN DISTRICT SEVEN. IT'S 120 SECOND STREET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND WE HAD THE RIBBON CUTTING YESTERDAY, ALTHOUGH THE, THE TREES HAVE BEEN PLANTED FOR A WHILE NOW. AND, UM, IT, UH, IT'S AN AREA ABOUT 12,000 SQUARE FEET, INCLUDES 44 TREES, SHRUBS, POLLINATOR, GARDEN LOG STUMPS, AND, UM, DE COMPOSED GRANDE PATHWAYS. AND THIS IS, UH, THE ONE AT, UH, SACRAMENTO CITY UNIFIED DISTRICT IS PARKWAY. IT'S A LITTLE LARGER. IT'S, UM, 15,000 SQUARE FEET INSTEAD OF 12,000. AND, UH, IT HAS 58 TREES IN 44 TREES, AND SIMILAR ELEMENTS [01:25:01] LIKE LOG STUMPS, UH, UH, BOULDERS AND, AND PATHWAYS. SO THIS ALLOWED US TO COMPARE, YOU KNOW, UH, THE PROCESSES WITH BOTH DISTRICTS AND BOTH PROJECTS WERE GREAT AND SUCCESSFUL, AND, UH, ACCOMPLISH THE GOALS. HOWEVER, UM, YOU KNOW, THE, THE PILOT AT LA UC TOOK 30 MONTHS TO COMPLETE, AND THE ONE IN SACRAMENTO TOOK 14 MONTHS. UH, AND OF COURSE, THAT CREATES MORE COST IN TERMS OF STAFF TIME. UM, SO THERE WERE, UM, ANYWAY, SO THE, THE OTHER THING WE WE'VE BEEN DOING OVER THE, THE LAST FEW YEARS IS LOOKING AT OTHER CASE STUDIES, UH, OTHER PROJECTS. AND THIS PARTICULAR ONE, UM, I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S GONNA BE CALLED CESAR CHAVEZ ANYMORE, BUT THIS IS THE NAME OF THE CAMPUS TO TODAY. SO APOLOGIES FOR THAT. UM, SO WE, THIS IS ONE THAT I WORKED ON PERSONALLY WHEN I WAS AT TRUST REPUBLIC LAND IS A, A FULL RENOVATION OF A SCHOOLYARD. UH, YOU KNOW, THE, THE DATA IS, YOU KNOW, SIX, UH, 620 STUDENTS PLANTED, 65 TREES REMOVED, 14,000 SQUARE FEET OF ASSAULT AND CREATED GARDEN PATHWAYS, OUTDOOR CLASSROOM, NATURAL MATERIALS. AND, AND IT HAS A, A, A, A NATURAL, UM, A WOODEN PLAY STRUCTURE TOO. AND THIS WAS OPEN IN 2021, BUT IF YOU LOOK AT COST ESCALATION RIGHT NOW, IT WOULD BE ABOUT 2.1 MILLION. UM, IN ADDITION, WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT, OKAY, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A LOT OF COST DATA, AND WE, UH, JUST PUT OUT A REPORT, UH, WITH COLLABORATION FROM, UM, UH, UC, DAVIS, BEVIN NASH MILLER, WHO IS, UH, UM, WITH, UH, OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE AND, UH, DISTRICT LEADERS AND, UH, CONTRACTORS THAT HELPED WITH THIS STUDY LOOKING AT WHAT ARE THE COSTS OF IMPLEMENTATION OF A SCHOOL YEAR, FOREST AND MAINTENANCE OVER 40 YEARS, UH, IN COMPARING SOME WITH ASPHALT, UH, ARTIFICIAL, UH, TURF AND GRASS. SO, I'M NOT GONNA GO OVER THE STUDY, WE'RE GONNA PRESENT THIS AT ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY OF PRACTICES, BUT I, I, I THINK WE SHARED THAT WITH YOU BECAUSE IT'S VERY, UM, EYE-OPENING. BECAUSE IF, ONCE YOU ADD EVERYTHING, CA ASPHALT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED EVERY 20 YEARS, IT NEEDS TO BE RESEALED TO STAY WITHOUT CRACKS AND ALL THAT. SO ONCE YOU HAVE ALL THAT, UH, IT COSTS ALMOST THE SAME AS SCHOOL YEAR FOREST, ACTUALLY, SCHOOL YEAR FOREST ARE A LITTLE LESS. THE, THE, THE CHALLENGE IS THE, WHERE THE FUNDING IS COMING FROM AND HOW THEIR FUNDING INSTEAD OF BEING IN, IN, UH, INCREMENTS IS LIKE, UH, REGULAR FUNDING. SO, UM, AND SO WHY, SO WITH THIS INFORMATION, WE SEE THAT LAUC PROJECTS DO TAKE LONGER AND COST MORE. UH, I THINK WE SAW AN ESTIMATE OF EIGHT TO $12 MILLION AT GREENING PROJECTS. SO THE QUESTION IS WHY, AND WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? I THINK, UM, THERE'S A LOT BEING DONE ALREADY, WHICH IS GREAT. I THINK THE ECOS SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE IS WORKING ON REMOVING SOME OF THESE BARRIERS. UH, I MEAN, WITH SUCH A BIG DISTRICT, UH, WITH SO MANY SCHOOLS, YOU NEED SYSTEMS. AND THE SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO PERPETUATE ASPHALT BECAUSE THAT'S HOW HAS IT HAS BEEN DONE FOR THE LAST, I DON'T KNOW, 20 YEARS. SO CHANGING THAT, IT'S A LITTLE HARDER FOR A BIG DISTRICT, BUT IT, IT IS DOABLE. SO, UM, AND THERE'S ALSO A LOT OF GREAT, UH, NON-PROFIT GREENING PARTNERS AND A LOT OF GREAT FUNDERS LIKE CAL FIRE. SO WE ARE VERY HOPEFUL THAT THIS IS, UM, YOU KNOW, GONNA CHANGE, UH, VERY SOON. BUT IN TERMS OF WHAT, UH, BARRIERS WE IDENTIFIED, FIRST OF ALL, THE, THE AGREEMENT THAT IS USED FOR, UM, THIRD PARTY LED GREENING PROJECTS IS NOT APPROPRIATE. SO, A DEVELOP, THE DEVELOPMENT I'M BRINGING IS MORE DESIGNED FOR, UH, DISTRICT LED PROJECTS WHERE THEY HIRE A CONTRACTOR, BUT IT'S NOT A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH BECAUSE I THINK MOST OF THE, UM, CONTROL IS ON L-A-U-S-D AND THE PARTNER, EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE BRINGING THE FUNDS, THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER TIMELINE AND FUNDING, AND THEN THEY GET CAUGHT INTO IN THAT SITUATION. UM, THAT IS, AGAIN, THE, THE AGREEMENT TEMP PLAN LEADS TO WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE PARTNER AND WHAT'S THE AUTHORITY THAT THEY HAVE, BECAUSE THEY'RE, THEY HAVE THE FUNDING, BUT THEY DON'T HAVE A LOT OF CONTROL. SO THAT, UH, CREATES A LOT OF FRICTION, UH, THE FEES, I'M GLAD THAT'S BEING WORKED ON AS WELL. I SAW A PRESENTATION THE LAST MONTH PRESENTATION, SO I'M NOT GONNA TALK MUCH ABOUT THAT. BUT THAT WAS A BIG BARRIER TOO, UM, THAT THE APPROVALS ARE VERY BUREAUCRATIC AND FRAGMENTED, AND THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS INVOLVED. THOSE STANDARDS, UM, OF COURSE THEY NEED TO BE STATE, YOU KNOW, ACCESSIBILITY AND OTHER THINGS, BUT THEY'RE, THEY DON'T COME FROM THE STATE. SO THE DISTRICT HAS CONTROL OVER, UH, THOSE, AND IN OTHER PROJECTS WE WORK WITH, WITH DISTRICTS, UH, THEY WERE, THEY, THEY MAYBE, MAYBE HAD THE IRRIGATION STANDARDS, BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF STANDARDS AND THEY DID MORE LIKE A PROJECT BY PROJECT APPROVALS. UH, SO THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROFESSIONAL WOULD PROPOSE AND THEY WOULD SAY, NO, I THINK IT'S GOOD TO HAVE STANDARDS, BUT SOMETIMES THE STANDARDS GET ON THE WAY, UH, OF CREATIVITY. SO I WOULD SAY, I THINK THINKING ABOUT FUNDING A PROCESS WHERE, OF COURSE THE DISTRICT, UH, STAFF NEED TO BE PART OF THAT, BUT MAYBE BRINGING IN EXPERTISE FROM, UH, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS, UH, PEOPLE THAT DO, UH, SCHOOL GREENING, YOU KNOW, CAL FIRE FOR TREE PLANTING, JUST TO UPDATE THAT, UH, IN A WAY THAT IS, UM, FOCUSED ON NATURE. I THINK THAT WOULD BE A GOOD INVESTMENT. AND, UM, BECAUSE OF COURSE CHRISTO'S OFFICE IS, I DON'T KNOW, FOUR PEOPLE. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY CAN DO ALL THAT . AND SO, UM, AND, AND NOT JUST FOR THIS, BUT ALSO HOW THAT CAN HAVE RIPPLE EFFECTS IN THE LIKELIHOOD OF FUTURE PARTNERSHIPS OR, OR BEING ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OTHER KINDS OF, UM, UH, SHARED APPLICATIONS OR PROJECTS AND, AND FUNDING STREAMS. SO REALLY APPRECIATE ALL OF THE PEOPLE HERE WHO ARE WORKING SO HARD TO FIGURE THAT OUT. SO OF THE, UH, 3 MILLION THAT'S SET ASIDE FOR COMMUNITY PARTNERS, HOW MUCH OF THAT MONEY, IF YOU KNOW, HAS BEEN SPENT? FIRST PART, HOW MANY PROJECTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED? SECOND PART, AND WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE DIFFICULTY IN GETTING THOSE FUNDS TO THE COMMUNITY PARTNERS? I GUESS THAT'S A QUESTION FOR CHRISTUS . ON OUR PROJECT, WE GOT 17,000 TO COVER SOME OF THE LAUC FEES WE COVERED, I THINK THE TOTAL WAS 34 AND UH, THAT HELPED WITH, YOU KNOW, ABOUT HALF. BUT YEAH, THANKS, I'LL BE ABLE TO EXPAND ON THAT. UM, SO WE HAVE, UH, ONE PROJECT OUT OF THE CAL FIRE, THIS LATEST GRANT THAT WE HAVE. UM, OUT OF THE 33 PROJECTS, WE HAVE ONE PROJECT THAT WAS COMPLETED. WE HAVE FOUR PROJECTS THAT ARE GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS OF BEING COMPLETED. AND THEN WE HAVE, UM, THE REST OF THEM IN DESIGN ON PLANNING, AND SOME OF THEM ON HOLD. THE, UH, THE $3 BILLION THAT WERE ALLOCATED BY THE BOARD, UH, THEY WERE ALLOCATED TO ALL THE PROJECTS. WE CAME UP WITH A METHODOLOGY THAT WE WORK WITH THE, UH, WITH OUR PARTNERS TO SEE WHAT'S GONNA BECOME MORE EQUITABLE. AND THE BEST THING WAS TO TAKE THE ACTUAL GRANT AMOUNT THAT WERE RECEIVED FROM THE CAL FIRE GRANT AND DO A DISTRIBUTION TO ALL THE PROJECTS BASED ON THE GRANT AMOUNT THAT THEY RECEIVED. THAT CAME TO AN ESTIMATION OF ABOUT, OF ABOUT 5% OF WHAT THE DISTRICT, UH, UH, 5% OF THE DISTRICT FEES. UH, A PROJECT ITSELF. IF YOU TAKE A PROJECT, JUST ANY PROJECT, UM, THE TYPICAL, THE ESTIMATED COST FOR THE FEES ON THE PROJECT, AND WHEN I SAY FEES, I'M, I'M, UH, SHARING MOSTLY THAT ANYTHING FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSPECTION, THE TIGER TEAM THAT HAS TO WORK ON THE TEAM, THE, UM, UH, THOSE COSTS, THEY ESTIMATED ABOUT 10% OF THE ACTUAL PROJECT COSTS. SO OUT OF THE 10%, 5% OF THAT NOW CAN BE COVERED OUT OF THE $3 MILLION, UH, FOR THE, UH, TOTAL OF $34 MILLION THAT SAY WERE RECEIVED OUT OF THE CAL FIRE GRANT. UM, AND, UH, AND THAT'S WHERE IT'S BECOMING CHALLENGING. AS WE DISTRIBUTED THE PROJECTS THAT THEY WERE COMPLETED, WE'RE ABLE TO DISTRIBUTE THE MONEY ON THE PROJECTS, THE PROJECTS THAT ARE GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS DESIGN PLANNING, THE MONEY IS THERE TO PAY FOR A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF FEES THAT'S GONNA BE IMPOSED ON THE PROJECT ITSELF. UM, AND THAT'S THROUGH DISCUSSIONS WITH THE PARTNERS, HOW THEY, THEY WOULD LIKE TO ALLOCATE THEIR FUNDING SO THEY DON'T NOT HAVE TO BE SENDING CHECKS TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO DO A DESIGN REVIEW OR TO ASSIGN AN OAR TO PAY FOR FOR THEIR TIME. SO WE KIND OF KEEP [01:50:01] THAT ACCOUNTING AND WE USE IT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE PARTNER AS THE PROJECT MOVE THROUGH THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF ITS PROJECT. THANK YOU. SURE. UM, I HAVE A QUESTION. AND I THINK THAT'S REALLY HEARTBREAKING. SO IN ON ONE END, IT'S THE RISK OF [01:55:01] NOT DOING THIS AND NOT MOVING FASTER, NOT ASSESSING THE INTERNAL PROCESSES AND BEING MORE EFFICIENT. IT'S A DIRECT RISK TO STUDENTS, RIGHT? UM, WE KNOW THAT THERE'S LIKE A ENROLLMENT CRISIS IN TERMS OF THERE'S DECLINING ENROLLMENT WITHIN THIS DISTRICT AND OTHER DISTRICTS WITHIN THE REGION. I THINK THERE'S A DUTY AS A, THE SECOND LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICT WITHIN THE COUNTRY TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE DOING RIGHT BY OVER 600,000, DO OVER 600,000 STUDENTS THAT WE SERVE EVERY DAY IN THOSE COMMUNITIES, AND THOSE PARENTS THAT MAKE THE CHOICE TO PUT THEIR STUDENTS INTO OUR SCHOOLS. UM, SO I THINK THO THAT, THAT'S A RISK RIGHT THERE, LIKE BY NOT, YOU KNOW, REALLY BEING GOOD STEWARDS OF FUNDING AND BEING GOOD STEWARDS OF OUR WORD AS IT RELATES TO THE RESOLUTION. SO I'LL TURN IT OVER TO HENRY. YEAH. SO SOME OF THE CHALLENGES THAT CAN ARISE ARE, ARE, IS THE DELAY IN FUNDING. UM, THE ELIS O CAN GRANT SOLICITATION. UM, WE WERE READY TO ROLL THAT OUT SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, BUT IT, IT WASN'T UNTIL WE STARTED TO SEE SOME OF THE PROGRESS THAT L-A-U-S-D HAS MADE IN WORKING WITH OUR GREEN PARTNERS, THAT WE FELT THAT IT WAS THE RIGHT TIME TO MAKE THAT FUNDING AVAILABLE IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THAT MONEY IS, UH, WELL SPENT AND, AND, UH, THAT WE ARE SUCCESSFUL IN SPENDING IT. UM, IT, IT CAN ALSO REDUCE THE COMPETITIVENESS OF PROJECTS IF, IF IT'S GONNA COST A LOT MORE TO DO THE SAME TYPE OF WORK IN COMPARISON TO ANOTHER SCHOOL DISTRICT OR ANOTHER CAMPUS.
