I'M JUST GONNA SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PURPOSE OF THIS COMMITTEE, WHAT WE'VE ACCOMPLISHED IN YEARS PAST, AND THEN WE'LL TURN IT OVER TO SCHOOL OPERATIONS TO SHARE SOME UPDATES FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. THIS COMMITTEE HAS BEEN IN EFFECT FOR ABOUT THREE YEARS NOW, AND WE REALLY NEED TO EXAMINE DATA AND TO LOOK AT THE DISTRICT'S POLICIES AND PRACTICES AS IT RELATES TO CLIMATE, CULTURE AND SAFETY. WE'VE LOOKED AT THINGS LIKE COMMUNITY BASED SAFETY AND SAFE PASSAGES. WE'VE LOOKED AT POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORTS AND RESTORATIVE JUSTICE. WE'VE LOOKED AT STAFFING AND OPERATIONAL SUPPORT, AND WE'VE REALLY LOOKED AT THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE, UM, TRYING TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW TO SERVE OUR STUDENTS FIRST AND FOREMOST, BUT OF COURSE, ALSO OUR STAFF AND OUR FAMILY MEMBERS, UM, IN YEARS PAST. OH, THANKS. LET'S SEE IF I CAN DO THIS. YEP. SO THAT'S WHAT I JUST WENT. YEP. UM, YEP. YEARS PAST, WE LOOKED AT THE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE SURVEY. WE LOOKED AT ISTAR DATA, WHICH IS THE INCIDENTS ON AND AROUND CAMPUS. UM, WE LOOKED AT, UH, BSAP SCHOOLS, AND WE'RE GONNA SEE A LITTLE BIT OF THAT TODAY. AND WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO ELEVATE BEST PRACTICES, INCLUDING WORKING WITH THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES AND THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES. NOW. I THINK WE'LL GET A LITTLE BIT OF AN UPDATE ON THAT, UM, HOW WE PARTNER TOGETHER TO REDUCE VIOLENCE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS. AND WE'RE SO GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE PARTNERSHIPS WE HAVE. OOPS, THIS GOES A LITTLE FASTER THAN I THOUGHT. UM, LET'S SEE. WE HAVE HAD SOME RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE [00:05:01] PAST, SO LAST YEAR WE REALLY RECOMMENDED, UM, WORKING MORE CLOSELY WITH THE FOLKS TRAINED IN, UH, CULTURE AND CLIMATE, SO OUR SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT ADVISORS, UM, THINKING ABOUT INCREASING, UH, FAMILY, UH, ENGAGEMENT IN A MEANINGFUL WAY BECAUSE OUR PARENTS PLAY SUCH A LARGE ROLE IN KEEPING OUR SCHOOLS AND OUR STUDENTS SAFE. UM, WE'VE BEEN SPENDING A LOT OF TIME TALKING ABOUT SAFE PASSAGES TO AND FROM CAMPUS, AND YOU'LL HEAR A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THAT TODAY AS WELL. AND, UM, WE HAD A GREAT RECOMMENDATION LAST YEAR ABOUT NON-INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES. SO HOW DO WE FOCUS ON LUNCH AND NUTRITION AND RECESS TO HELP SCHOOLS BE AS WELCOMING, UH, AS POSSIBLE. UM, WE ALSO LOOKED AT, UH, MENTAL HEALTH, UH, AND HEARD FROM SOME SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS ABOUT STUDENT LED, UH, CAMPAIGNS AND EVENTS ON CAMPUSES. WE LOVE WHEN STUDENTS ARE LEADERS AND WE PROVIDE THOSE SPACES. UM, AND WE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT STAFFING LAST YEAR AS WELL. AND AS WE TAKE ON THE FISCAL STABILIZATION PLAN THIS YEAR AND POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS FOR THE FUTURE, WE WANNA MAKE SURE WE'RE PRESERVING THOSE SUPPORTS THAT OUR KIDS MOST DESPERATELY NEED. UM, SO THAT WILL BE A TOUGH CONVERSATION COMING UP THIS YEAR FOR THE BOARD. AND THEN THE YEAR PRIOR, WE HAD SOME RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT JUST CLARIFYING SOME OF THE TERMS WE USE. AND SO YOU'LL SEE SOME OF THAT UP ON OUR WEBSITE AROUND COMMUNITY BASED SAFETY. UM, WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT PUBLISHING DATA REGULARLY. UM, AND SO THAT'S WHAT PART OF THIS COMMITTEE DOES IS, IS SHARE THAT DATA PUBLICLY, UM, FOR FOLKS WHO ARE CURIOUS ABOUT HOW THINGS ARE GOING. Beginning of Year Efforts] US STARTED WITH RESCHE, OUR CHIEF OF SCHOOL OPERATIONS, TO GIVE US A BIT OF A BEGINNING OF YEAR UPDATE NOW THAT WE ARE IN OUR THIRD MONTH OF SCHOOL. UM, AND ONCE ANDREAS PAUSES, WE WILL INVITE THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS TO ASK QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS, UH, BEFORE WE INVITE UP OUR SECOND PRESENTATION. SO WITH THAT, MR. TATE, THANK YOU SO MUCH. UM, AS YOU KNOW, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WAS BORN OUT OF, UH, THE BLACK STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PLAN ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO NOW. THERE WAS A CALL TO ACTION THERE, UH, TO PUT INTO PLACE A COMMUNITY-BASED SAFETY PILOT WHERE WE BROUGHT IN EXTERNAL ORGANIZATIONS, UH, TO PROVIDE SERVICES, UH, ON OUR CAMPUSES AND NEAR OUR CAMPUSES. UH, SPECIFICALLY TODAY, I'LL BE TOUCHING ON SORT OF THE THREE BIGGEST PROGRAMS IN THIS SPACE. UH, THE ONE THAT GETS THE MOST ATTENTION IS SAFE PASSAGE. SAFE PASSAGE IS A PROGRAM WHERE WE ESSENTIALLY ASSIST STUDENTS IN MAKING THEIR WAY TO AND FROM SCHOOL IN A SAFE FASHION. UH, BUT WE ALSO HAVE TWO ON CAMPUS PROGRAMS, PEACE BUILDING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT. AND REALLY WHAT THE SLIDE HIGHLIGHTS IS THE NUMBER OF PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE. UH, WE HAVE AN ANNUAL BUDGET, UH, UNDER THE BSAP UMBRELLA FOR THIS PROGRAM OF, UH, A LITTLE BIT UNDER 15 MILLION. AND I'M HAPPY TO REPORT THAT ALL OF THOSE DOLLARS HAVE BEEN SPENT FOR THIS YEAR. AND WHEN I SAY SPENT, I DON'T MEAN ENCUMBERED. I DON'T MEAN SITTING ON A FUNDING LINE. I MEAN, REALLY AND TRULY, THERE ARE PROGRAMS IN PLACE. UH, IF YOU LOOK AT THE LAST SORT OF TRANCHE OF DATA THERE, WHERE IT SAYS ACTIVE PROGRAMS, AGAIN, THAT GENUINELY MEANS ACTIVE. WE HAVE 173 CBSP PROGRAMS THAT ARE IN PLACE THAT IF YOU GO VISIT SCHOOLS, YOU WILL SEE THEM. WE HAVE 76 SAFE PASSAGE PROGRAMS. WE HAVE 58 PEACE BUILDING PROGRAMS. WE HAVE 39 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS. UH, PEACE BUILDING, UH, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY NOT KNOW, IS, AGAIN, AN ON-CAMPUS PROGRAM THAT ASSISTS STUDENTS WITH, ESSENTIALLY WITH CONFLICT RESOLUTION. WHAT WE WANT TO TEACH OUR STUDENTS IS THE ABILITY TO RESOLVE THEIR OWN CONFLICTS WITHOUT NECESSARILY ALWAYS NEEDING ADULT INTERVENTION. HAVING THOSE CONVERSATIONS PEER-TO-PEER, BEING ABLE TO RESOLVE. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, AGAIN, IS AN ON-CAMPUS PROGRAM THAT TEACHES OUR STUDENTS HOW TO BE ADVOCATES FOR THEMSELVES, NOT JUST ON CAMPUS, BUT IN THE LARGER COMMUNITY, BE IT IN A POLITICAL SPACE OR A CIVIC SPACE. SO AGAIN, ALL OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE IN PLACE. WE STARTED OUT WITH A BUDGET OF ABOUT 14 MILLION. UH, YOU MAY RECALL THAT THE BOARD, UH, LAST SPRING, UH, GAVE BSAP AN ADDITIONAL ALLOCATION OF DOLLARS. SO WE'VE ACTUALLY EVEN TAPPED INTO THAT. AND WE'VE ALREADY SPENT $19 MILLION THIS YEAR. [00:10:01] AND AGAIN, THESE ARE FOR OUR BSAP SCHOOLS. SO GROUP ONE, GROUP TWO, AND GROUP THREE. NOW, WE ALSO HAVE SCHOOLS THAT FALL INTO THE GROUP FOUR CATEGORY FOR BSAP. AND AGAIN, UH, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY NOT KNOW, THE, THE GROUPINGS ARE ESSENTIALLY BASED ON CONCENTRATIONS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS AND A NUMBER OF OTHER FACTORS. WHEN WE LOOK AT, UH, THE, THE GROUPINGS FOR THESE SCHOOLS. SO WE HAVE SOME SCHOOLS, AND IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT WE HAVE ONE WELL REPRESENTED TODAY HERE THAT FALL INTO GROUP FOUR. UH, AND SO WE WOULDN'T NECESSARILY USE BSAP DOLLARS FOR THOSE SCHOOLS. SO WE HAD AN ALLOCATION OF UNSPENT SCHOOL POLICE DOLLARS THAT WENT TOWARDS THESE SCHOOLS. NOW, FOR THESE SITES, WE SPECIFICALLY PROVIDE SAFE PASSAGE, RIGHT? THAT'S THE CALL HERE. THAT'S THE CHARGE HERE. SO, AGAIN, I'M HAPPY TO REPORT THAT THIS IS ANOTHER AREA WHERE WE HAVE SPENT ALL OF OUR DOLLARS, UH, IN FACT, WE WENT A SHADE OVER. UM, AND WE HAVE ACTIVE PROGRAMS AT 13 SCHOOLS ACROSS THE DISTRICT. AND AGAIN, THAT'S BUILDING ON THE OTHER SCHOOLS THE, UH, SO-CALLED BSAP SCHOOLS THAT I ALREADY SHARED ALSO. AND THE, UH, BOARD MEMBER ORTIZ FRANKLIN ALLUDED TO THIS. I'M VERY HAPPY TO REPORT THAT WE HAVE ACTIVE PARTNERSHIPS, UH, WITH, UH, THE CITY VIA GRID WITH THE COUNTY, THROUGH THE OFFICE OF VIOLENCE PREVENTION. UH, WE FINALIZED OUR MOU WITH THE COUNTY JUST ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF AGO. UH, IF MEMORY SERVES, THESE ARE EXCELLENT PROGRAMS. IN FACT, ON MY WAY HERE, LITERALLY TO THIS MEETING, WE WERE IN CONTACT WITH SHAVAN AND THE TEAM OVER AT GRID TO HELP US OUT AT ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS THAT WAS HAVING SOME CONFLICT THAT WAS POTENTIALLY RELATED TO GANG ACTIVITY. SO THESE ARE ACTIVE PROGRAMS THAT LEAN INTO SCHOOLS THAT MOST NEED THE ASSISTANCE. THEY'RE AMAZING PARTNERS, UH, SPECIFICALLY WITH GRID. THEY'VE ALSO COMMITTED TO HELPING OUT ON AN ONGOING BASIS. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE FAMILIARITY WITH THESE PROGRAMS, THEY'RE USUALLY SORT OF, IT'S A SURGE PROGRAM. SO WHEN THERE'S AN ISSUE AT A SCHOOL, THEY'LL GO AND THEY'LL BE THERE FOR THREE TO FIVE DAYS, MAYBE A LITTLE BIT LONGER. WITH GRID, WE HAVE A COMMITMENT FOR A SMALL BATCH OF SCHOOLS WHERE THEY'LL BE RUNNING A PILOT PROGRAM WHERE THEY'RE ACTUALLY THERE EVERY SINGLE DAY. OKAY. UH, WITH THAT, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A, A QUICK LOOK AT OUR TIERED FIDELITY INVENTORY AND OUR, UH, POSITIVE BEHAVIOR PROGRAMS. AND WITH THAT, I'LL TURN IT OVER TO LAURA Z. THANK YOU. SO INVENTORY MEANS WE'RE JUST LOOKING AT WHAT DO WE HAVE IN PLACE AND WHERE DO WE GO FROM THERE? SO, OH, RIGHT HERE. ALRIGHT. THE CLICKER IS RIGHT HERE. SO, THE TFI IS A TOOL THAT THE DISTRICT THAT WE ARE USING TO TAKE INVENTORY, HELP HAVE SCHOOLS TAKE INVENTORY OF WHERE THEY ARE IN THE, THE, THE PROCESS OF THEIR PBIS, UH, IMPLEMENTATION. SO IT IS SOMETHING THAT'S USED NATIONWIDE. SO WE FEEL GOOD USING IT BECAUSE IT IS A, IT IS AN EVIDENCE-BASED TOOL THAT WE'RE USING, UH, THIS, THIS SEMESTER, SCHOOL TEAMS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THREE TASKS. SO I KNOW WE'RE TALKING ABOUT BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. WHAT IS IT THAT WE'RE DOING? THE FIRST ONE IS SCHOOL TEAMS ARE REQUIRED TO MEET MONTHLY, RIGHT? TO MEET MONTHLY, TO, TO REVIEW THEIR PROGRESS TOWARD WHERE THEY ARE WITH THEIR IMPLEMENTATION AND HOW THEY ARE WORKING TOWARD THEIR GOALS. UM, THE, THE SECOND PIECE THAT SCHOOLS ARE DOING IS, UM, ASSESSING THEIR CURRENT LEVEL WHERE THEY ARE. SO IF THEY DO IT IN OCTOBER, IT MIGHT BE DIFFERENT THAN NOVEMBER. SO IT'S A SNAPSHOT IN TIME OF WHERE THEY ARE. AND LOOKING AT, ARE WE ZERO, ONE OR TWO? I WANT US TO THINK ABOUT WHAT THE ZERO DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE NOT DOING ANYTHING RIGHT. ZERO DOES NOT MEAN WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING. TWO DOES NOT MEAN LIKE WE ARE PERFECTION AND LIKE WE CAN STOP NOW. IT'S, IT'S KIND OF AN EVER-CHANGING INVENTORY BECAUSE THINGS EBB AND FLOW. SO SCHOOLS ARE TO, ARE LOOKING TO ASSESS WHERE THEY ARE, OR TAKE INVENTORY, I SHOULD SAY, OF WHERE THEY ARE AT THE CURRENT MOMENT ON, ON EACH OF THOSE FEATURES. AND THEN DEVELOP TWO TO THREE GOALS BASED ON WHERE THEY ARE. UM, FINALLY ON, BY DECEMBER 5TH, EVERY SCHOOL SHOULD SUBMIT THEIR SCORES AND THEIR GOALS THROUGH THE PRINCIPAL'S PORTAL. SO THOSE ARE THE THREE TASKS THAT SCHOOLS ARE BEING ASKED TO DO FOR THE FALL SEMESTER. UH, THEY WERE ASKED TO DO IT LAST SEMESTER TOO, WHEN YOU CAN SEE HERE THE OVERALL SCORES, UM, THAT WERE GIVEN. AND NOW I WANT US TO REALIZE THAT WE WOULDN'T WANNA SEE 100% IN THE TWOS, BECAUSE THAT WOULD MEAN PEOPLE WERE NOT BEING FULLY HONEST, RIGHT? WE'RE, WE'RE NOT PROBABLY GONNA GET A HUNDRED PERCENT. NO ONE'S GONNA GET A HUNDRED PERCENT ALL THE TIME. UM, WELL, WHAT I WANT US TO DO IS, WHAT WE WANNA DO IS LOOK OVER TIME AND SEE HOW HAVE WE GROWN? WHAT ARE OUR HIGHLIGHTS? SO IF WE LOOK AT THAT, WE SEE THAT ALMOST 80% OF OUR SCHOOLS ARE SAYING THEY HAVE THEIR BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS IN PLACE. AND ALMOST 7 75 ARE, HAVE A PROCESS, A CLEAR PROCESS WHERE THEY [00:15:01] ARE TEACHING THOSE EXPECTATIONS. A LOT OF OUR SCHOOLS ARE TEACHING 'EM, AND MAYBE THEY DON'T HAVE THE PROCESS WRITTEN OUT YET, SO THAT MIGHT GO TO A ONE. SO I WANT US TO THINK ABOUT, IT'S NOT LIKE, OH, I GOTTA SEE ALL OF THESE. WE CAN SEE THAT SOME AREAS, SCHOOLS ARE FINDING MORE, UM, THAT ARE EASIER TO IMPLEMENT OTHERS WHERE THEY'RE WORKING ON STILL WITH THAT IMPLEMENTATION. AND YOU CAN SEE THE NEXT ONE WE HAVE BROKEN BY REGION. UM, AND THE VERY SIMILAR, RIGHT? THEY'RE VERY SIMILAR TO THE DISTRICT WIDE SCORES. UM, WE DO HAVE SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT ADVISORS. WE HAVE ABOUT 30 SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT ADVISORS THAT DO SUPPORT SCHOOLS. AND LOOKING AT WHERE ARE YOU, RIGHT? AND HOW CAN I HELP YOU TO, TO BUILD ON YOUR ACTION PLANS. UM, WITH THAT, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS THE SCHOOLS MAKING THEIR GOALS. SO YOU CAN SEE HERE THAT IN THE, UM, IN THE SPRING THAT THE GOALS THAT SCHOOLS MADE WERE THE MAJORITY OF SCHOOLS WERE TEAM OPERATING PROCEDURES, DEFINING THEIR PROBLEM BEHAVIORS INVOLVING FACULTY, UM, MAKING SURE THEIR BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS WERE VERY CLEAR, PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE COMPOSITION OF THEIR TEAM. UM, SOMETIMES OUR TEAMS ARE DON'T HAVE A STUDENT ON 'EM. AND SO THAT WOULD NOT MAKE IT A FULL TEAM IF IT WAS A HIGH SCHOOL. OFTENTIMES IT'S MAYBE A PARENT OR COMMUNITY, UH, MEMBER THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO PUT ON THEIR TEAM THAT WOULD MAKE IT NOT A FULL TEAM. SO THE TEAM COMPETITION, UH, COMPOSITION IS, IS, UH, WE HAVE 138 SCHOOLS THAT PUT THAT AS SOME OF THEIR GOAL. SO, UM, I WANNA REMIND US THAT IT'S REALLY NOT ABOUT THE SCORE, IT'S MORE ABOUT THE, THE GOALS THAT SCHOOLS MAKE AND HELPING THEM TO, TO, UH, TO IMPLEMENT WHAT IT IS THEY'RE SAYING THEY'RE GONNA IMPLEMENT TO REACH THOSE GOALS. SO THEY DO LOOK AT THE TFI BOTH IN THE FALL AND IN THE SPRING TO TAKE INVENTORY OF WHERE THEY ARE AND TO PLAN THEIR, UM, THEIR ACTION PLANS. AND NOW I'M GONNA PASS IT BACK TO MR. TATE AND ASHLEY. I'LL JUST ADD A COUPLE OF VERY, VERY QUICK POINTS TO WHAT LAURA JUST PRESENTED. THERE'S A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT WE PUT IN PLACE FOR THIS YEAR JUST TO CONTINUE TO ENSURE THAT WE HAVE FIDELITY TO OUR PBIS PROGRAMS. ONE IS ON A MONTHLY BASIS NOW. WE PUBLISH SAMPLE AGENDAS, SAMPLE SLIDE DECKS FOR OUR SCHOOLS TO USE TO HAVE THEIR MONTHLY PBIS COMMITTEE MEETINGS. WE KNOW HOW IMPACTED OUR SCHOOLS ARE IN TERMS OF WORKLOAD FOR EVERYONE THERE, BE IT TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS, PARENT VOLUNTEERS, AND SO ON. SO, AGAIN, IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE A ONE SIZE FITS ALL, BUT AGAIN, IT'S AT LEAST GIVES OUR SCHOOLS A STARTING POINT. SO THEY HAVE AN AGENDA, THESE ARE THE THINGS YOU SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT IN OCTOBER, THESE ARE THE THINGS YOU SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT IN NOVEMBER AND SO ON, AND THEY CAN BUILD FROM THAT. THE OTHER THING THAT WE'RE DOING THAT WE'RE BRINGING BACK ACTUALLY FROM THE PRIOR SYSTEM, THE RUBRIC OF IMPLEMENTATION, IS THAT WE'RE ASKING OPERATIONS COORDINATORS TO PARTICIPATE IN VALIDATION VISITS TWICE A YEAR AT SCHOOLS. RIGHT UP UNTIL NOW, IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, WE'VE RELIED ON OUR SCHOOL TEAMS, UH, TO DO THAT VALIDATION PROCESS. AND SO THOSE STUDENTS GET PICKED UP, THEY GET LITERALLY HOME TO SCHOOL IN SOME INSTANCES WHERE THE FAMILY HAS GONE SO FAR AS TO TELL US THAT THEY EVEN HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT BRINGING THE YOUNGSTER OUT TO THE CURB IN FRONT OF THEIR HOME. WE ACTUALLY HAVE STAFF MEMBERS WHO WILL GO AND KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND SAY, HI, GOOD MORNING. YOU KNOW, I'M HERE TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD AND GET THEM ON THE BUS. ONE WAS, WE REACHED OUT TO OUR FAMILIES WHERE THERE WAS ALREADY A HISTORY OF STUDENTS STRUGGLING WITH, WITH, UH, ATTENDANCE, WITH BEING WHAT WE CALL CHRONICALLY ABSENT, WHICH WE DEFINE USUALLY AS STUDENTS THAT MISS 16 OR MORE DAYS IN A SCHOOL YEAR OF ABOUT 180 DAYS, WE ACTUALLY HOLD OURSELVES TO A HIGHER BAR THAN THE STATE DOES. SO WE REACHED OUT TO OUR CHRONICALLY ABSENT STUDENTS. WE ALSO REACHED OUT TO OUR STUDENTS, AND THIS IS WHERE WE LEVERAGED OUR, OUR, OUR SCHOOL SITE TEAMS THAT WE REACHED OUT TO FAMILIES THAT HAD CONCERNS, OR WE WERE AWARE THAT THEY HAD CONCERNS AROUND IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT. AGAIN, JUST TO REINFORCE THAT WE HAD RESOURCES AVAILABLE THAT SCHOOLS WERE SAFE SPACES. AND AS YOU'LL SEE THE NUMBERS, YOU KNOW, WE MADE ALMOST 13,500 PHONE CALLS. ANY EMERGENCY NEEDS THAT COME UP. UH, THE BEST PART IS, IS THAT THEY PARK ON SITE. UH, THEY ARE CONTRACTED EMPLOYEES. THEY'RE NOT LA UNIFIED EMPLOYEES, BUT WE TREAT 'EM LIKE PART OF THE FAMILY. UH, THEY HAVE A PARKING SPACE INSIDE OF OUR PARKING LOT. THEY CHECK IN THE MAIN OFFICE. THEY GATHER AND DO A STANDUP BEFORE THEY, UH, BREAK OUT TO THEIR AREAS. AND THEY GATHER AT THE END OF THE SHIFT WHEN THEY COME BACK IN THE AFTERNOON, JUST TO TOUCH BASE AND HAVE CONNECTION TO EACH OTHER AND TO THE SCHOOL, AND TO PROVIDE ANY REPORTS THAT MIGHT BE NECESSARY. AND SO I THINK THAT'S AN IMPORTANT, UH, PIECE TO NOTE THAT, THAT THE FUNDS IN THE PROGRAM, UM, IMPACTS NOT JUST ONE SCHOOL, BUT NUMEROUS SCHOOLS THAT ALL ARE EXPERIENCING VERY SIMILAR NEEDS. SO PRIOR TO THE EXISTENCE OF SAFE PASSAGE PROGRAM, WE DIDN'T HAVE A WAY TO ASSIGN SOMEBODY TO LOCATIONS AWAY FROM THE CAMPUS BECAUSE OF THE, THE NATURE OF THE POSITIONS THAT, [01:00:01] THAT WE HAVE AND DISTRICT HAS. SO WE NOW HAVE EYES AND EARS IN THE COMMUNITY. UM, WE PLACE THEM IN THE MOST, UM, NEEDY LOCATIONS. UH, AND THERE'S ENHANCED SAFETY FOR STUDENTS AS THEY WALK TO AND FROM SCHOOL. AND WE ARE ONE OF THOSE LOCATIONS THAT IS, UH, VERY ACTIVE WITH REGARD TO ICE ACTIVITY. AND IN FACT, THIS MORNING, THERE WERE REPORTS, YOU KNOW, ACROSS THE STREET AT OUR HOME DEPOT AND OUR WALMART, THAT THERE WERE TWO TEAMS OF AGENTS, YOU KNOW, PRESENT. AND THAT CREATES A LOT OF ANXIETY AND CONCERN FOR STUDENTS AS THEY PREPARE TO COME TO SCHOOL AND AS THEY DEPART FROM SCHOOL. UM, AND, UH, YOU KNOW, THAT, THAT IS, UM, A CHALLENGE AND, AND A NEED, UH, DURING THIS TIME. WE LOVE DATA. I JUST ATTENDED, UH, SUPERINTENDENT CARVALLO DATA DIG UPSTAIRS AND, UH, HERE NOW. AND SO, IN BOTH OF THOSE AREAS, UH, WITH IREADY DATA AND ALSO, UM, UH, ESPA DATA REGARDING MATH AND ELA, BOTH HAVE SHOWN, YOU KNOW, IMPROVEMENTS. SO AGAIN, UH, KIDS FEEL COMFORTABLE, KIDDOS FEEL COMFORTABLE COMING TO AND FROM SCHOOL. THEY'RE IN SCHOOL, AND THEIR PERFORMANCE, UH, IS INDICATING THAT ALSO. SO THE, THE, I THINK THE ANTICIPATORY SET ON THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT THAT THEY ARE, UH, GIVING US INFORMATION AND WE'RE ABLE TO ADDRESS CONCERNS PRIOR TO THEM, UH, HAVING STUDENTS BEING EXPOSED TO THESE POTENTIAL THREATS OR CONCERNS. UH, EVEN AT ONE POINT, SAFE PASSAGE TEAM ARRIVED AND SAID, YOU KNOW, THERE'S A LOST, UH, YOU KNOW, CHILD THAT WAS JUST IN NEED OF HELP. AND THEY COLLECTED THE CHILD AND ESCORTED THE CHILD IN THE MAIN OFFICE. AND, AND WE WERE ABLE TO GET OFFICIALS THERE AND TO RECONNECT THE CHILD THAT WAS MISSING FROM THEIR PARENT, UM, IN THAT MATTER. AND THEN THERE, YOU KNOW, THERE'VE BEEN DANGEROUS GROUPS, SOMETIMES GANG ACTIVITY AND ET CETERA. AND SO WHERE THOSE INDIVIDUALS HAVE BEEN COLLECTED OR BEEN PRESENT, UH, THEY HAVE REPORTED THAT. AND WE'VE BEEN ABLE THEN TO CONTACT SCHOOL POLICE AND GET AUTHORITIES TO THOSE LOCATIONS AND TO ADDRESS THOSE MATTERS IN ADVANCE OF THE, OF ITEMS, UH, OCCURRING. AND SO, SOMETIMES IN DATA, UH, THE DATA WE DON'T SEE, RIGHT, IS THE DATA THAT'S MOST IMPORTANT, WHICH IS THAT WE HAVE FEWER, YOU KNOW, REPORTS AND CONCERNS AND INCIDENTS OCCURRING BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE AND BEING PROACTIVE. BEFORE THE SCHOOL ENACTED THE SAFE PASSAGE PROGRAM, I WORRIED FOR MY SAFETY AND FOR MY PEER SAFETY, WITHOUT ANY SUPERVISION IS NORMAL TO ASSUME THE WORST POSSIBLE OUTCOMES. THE SAFETY PASSAGE PROGRAM HAS CREATED VISIBLE PRESENCE ON OUR SCHOOL ROUTES BY HAVING STAFF PRESENT, WEARING BRIGHT VEST AND CARRYING RADIOS. THIS ENSURES THAT WE STUDENTS FEEL PROTECTED AS WE WALK TO AND FROM SCHOOL. I HAVE NOTICED AN IMPROVEMENT IN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. I SEE FEWER HOMELESS, LOITERING, AND LESS GANG ACTIVITY NEAR OUR SCHOOL. THIS FREE PROGRAM OFFERS STUDENTS SUPPORT, ESPECIALLY TO THOSE WHOSE PARENTS WORK AND CAN'T DROP THEM OFF OR PICK THEM UP FROM SCHOOL. THE SAFE PASSAGE PROGRAM IS NOT ONLY KEEPING US SAFE, BUT ALSO CREATING A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT IN OUR COMMUNITY. EVERY MORNING, I'M GREETED BY FOUR PASSAGE STAFF MEMBERS WITH A BIG SMILE. THIS SIMPLE, POSITIVE INTERACTION HAS REALLY INFLUENCED HOW I START MY DAY. AND MANY STUDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY HAVE DIFFICULT LIVES AT HOME. AND THIS POSITIVE, THIS POSITIVITY, CAN TRANSFORM THEIR DAILY THANK YOU AIDS, WHOSE DAILY EFFORTS EXTEND BEYOND SUPPORT. I'M NOT SURE HOW LONG IT CAN, IT CAN CONTINUE FOR, I'M VERY HAPPY. AND I KNOW THAT A LOT OF PARENTS, UH, A LOT OF COMMUNITY PARENTS ARE HAPPY AS WELL. AND WITH THE LESS FOOT TRAFFIC, IT CAME IN INFESTED WITH HOMELESSNESS AND BULKY ITEMS THAT MADE IT VERY DIFFICULT TO WALK THROUGH THE TUNNEL. ONE EVENING WHEN SHE WENT TO GO PICK UP GABRIEL, A HOMELESS MAN FOLLOWED HER TOWARDS THE TUNNEL. SHE WISELY STOPPED TO LET HIM GO FIRST, BUT SHE PAUSED, MISS, EXCUSE ME, PAUSED MIDWAY TURNED, EXCUSE ME, HE FOLLOWED HER TO THE TUNNEL. SHE WISELY STOPPED TO LET HIM GO FIRST, BUT SHE PAUSED MIDWAY. THANKFULLY, THEY RESPONDED QUICKLY WITH OPERATION BRIGHT SPOT AND THE TUNNEL WAS CLEAN BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. THE PROBLEM DIDN'T STOP THERE. ON BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT, WE WALKED THE TUNNEL AGAIN AND HAD TO LITERALLY JUMP OVER FRESH PUDDLES OF URINE TO GET THIS, UM, JUST TO GET TO SCHOOL. WE REACHED OUT AGAIN. THIS IS WHAT CRIMINALIZING PARENTS LOOKS LIKE. I FOUGHT HARD TO CHANGE THE RECORD AND PROVE THAT CARL WAS A HIGH ACHIEVING STUDENT.
